Summary

Minutes

20:47 < jokeefe> ahoy!
20:57 < davidd> hi!
20:58 < davidd> congrats on the results!
20:58 < srevilak> davidd: thanks!
20:58 < noe> ahoy! thanks!
21:02 < jokeefe> ahoy noe & lisbon
21:02 < jokeefe> agenda at
        https://masspirates.org/wiki/November_6th,_2014_IRC_Meeting
21:02 < lisbon> hello
21:02 < srevilak> jokeefe, noe - how many people turned out for tonight's
        demonstration
21:02 < srevilak> I counted ~ 30 when I arrived
21:02 < jokeefe> I think there were 50-60 at their height
21:02 < srevilak> not bad
21:03 < noe> Overall, I think about 100ish did come, just at different
        times.
21:04 < jokeefe> ids - James O'Keefe, Somerville
21:04 < noe> Although people did not seem hopeful about the FCC's
decision, they still felt strongly about standing up for what they
        believe in.
21:04 < lisbon> Christopher Maria - Ludlow
21:04 < srevilak> Steve Revilak, Arlington
21:04 < noe> Noelani Kamelamela - Somerville
21:05 < lisbon> I have a relative who works for the FCC, he is outraged
at what has been going on recently and he is close to quitting
21:05 < jokeefe> wow
21:06 < lisbon> Which means hed have to move n
21:06 < lisbon> sorrry, pressed return by accident, which means he would
have to move and loose his high salary
21:07 < jokeefe> he could leak
21:07 < noe> i think the leaks we have been getting are from similarly
        outraged staff
21:07 < jokeefe> Starting: 1. Event Review
21:07 < lisbon> he could be deported, he's a Portugese citizen
21:08 < jokeefe> ah
21:08 < srevilak> that's something I've always wondered about. Must
take pretty thick skin to work for a three-letter agency, if you have
        a conscious
21:08 < srevilak> s/conscious/conscience/
21:09 < lisbon> The family believes he's gone mildly insane from that job
21:09 < jokeefe> Campaigns Review - noe you want summarize?
21:09 < jokeefe> poor guy
21:09 < noe> Sure. I think we did great. We had different sets of
volunteers according to different stages of the campaigns. My manager
        and I were taskhubs.
21:10 < jokeefe> ahoy kate_m
21:10 < kate_m> ahoy!
21:10 < noe> My post mortem about all the dates and man hours is up at
        votenoelani.org if people are interested.
21:10 < srevilak> noe: reading your post-mortem. Nice article
21:10 < noe> srevilak: thank you! I hope to finish the net neutrality
post before the FCC makes an announcement.
21:11 < jokeefe> ahoy, Kendra
21:11 < Kendra> hi
21:12 < jokeefe> Agenda at
        https://masspirates.org/wiki/November_6th,_2014_IRC_Meeting
21:12 < noe> Joe and my campaign were aligned for doing general Pirate
publicity as well as during some of the gathering and motivational stuff.
21:12 < kate_m> noe: excellent point about buddying up
21:13 < jokeefe> yes, a lot of cross support
21:13 < noe> kate_m: i think people sometimes forget to relay that
kind of stuff in a "oh my staffers or volunteers can figure it out
        for themselves"
21:14 < noe> kate_m: if one of our core values is taking care of people,
we need to do that with ourselves first
21:14 < kate_m> there's also a lot of millenial "la la, we live in a
post-bad-things society, I can ignore all that"
21:14 < jokeefe> noe, yes, need a better how to guide if we are to make
        running easier
21:15 < noe> man, i want to live in a post-bad-things society! its why
        activism makes sense to me.
21:15 < srevilak> [A
21:15 < srevilak> ^^^ cat
21:15 < jokeefe> ++ noe
21:15 < jokeefe> How did the Citizen Four showing go?
21:16 < srevilak> I (and Noe) went last Saturday. Completely packed,
        and sold out
21:16 < noe> Didn't really get to meet people, but I did chat with people
who recognized me. They, sadly, were not in district.
21:16 < jokeefe> :-(
21:17 < Kendra> What did you all think of the film?
21:17 < srevilak> Film focused a lot on greenwald and snowden. Not so
much on poitras (who presumably was behind the camera)
21:18 < noe> It didn't feel like rampant propaganda, which, that's
        pretty impressive.
21:18 < srevilak> snowden came across as a very down to earth guy,
who wanted to make this about the NSA -- and not himself
21:18 < jokeefe> good to hear. pando panned it, but I think the writer
        missed the point
21:19 < srevilak> I liked the scene where a few lawyers were talking
about what was and wasn't a plausable defense under Esponage act of 1917
21:19 < noe> I already knew that glenn greenwald is a genius journalist
and a queer, but man, seeing him be awesome made me so happy.
21:19 < Kendra> I'll look around online to see if there is somewhere to
        see it.
21:19 < srevilak> short summary: it's illegal to expose the illegal
        things your govt is doing
21:20 < noe> Kendra: Kendall Square Cinema may still have it for a
        bit longer.
21:20 < jokeefe> The Mask March seemed smaller than last year. ~50-60,
but was active. Wasn't able to stay for the whole thing.
21:21 < Kendra> No sure if I should do it
21:21 < kate_m> we didn't end up heading down. Gregg was supposed to
but slept in way too late
21:21 < jokeefe> ahoy, Lulu
21:21 < srevilak> Speaking of 3rd party candidates:
        http://rt.com/usa/202999-thirtyfive-dollar-governor-campaign/
21:21 < noe> I wanted to do it, but had expended too much energy at
        thepolls.
21:21 < Lulu> Just walked in the door.
21:21 < Lulu> ahoy
21:21 < noe> Yes! Healey is fantastic. He spent $35 and got 22% in
        Rhode Island's Gubernatorial Race.
21:21 < kate_m> honestly, I'm not big on rah rah gatherings with no
        set purpose
21:22 < kate_m> it's not like anons are a persecuted minority
21:22 < noe> ahoy!
21:22 < noe> Yeah, the Mask March . . . I'm happier with set, limited
        events like today.
21:22 * srevilak wonders - is RT on our press list?
21:22 < noe> Its easier to mingle, even though we're mostly introverts.
21:23 < srevilak> Hey, I was chanting.  :)
21:23 < Lulu> Jason and I lamented that you didn't say good bye when
        you left, Noe.
21:23 < noe> Lulu: sorry! Jamie and I had become pumpkins running
        on fumes.
21:24 < lisbon> What is "our press list" that srevilak speaks of
21:24 < noe> Lulu: also, we had an opportunity to chat with someone
who voted for me as we ran away
21:24 < Lulu> We forgive you. :-)
21:24 < Lulu> YOU ARE AWESOME
21:24 < Lulu> 12% woo hoo!
21:25 < Lulu> Have we already talked about how awesome your campaign was?
21:25 < noe> Lulu: yes. Can you hit the high points of Joe's campaign?
21:25 < jokeefe> yes, but it is nice to hear it
21:26 < Lulu> Jamie, you were awesome, too!
21:26 < jokeefe> awww
21:26 < Lulu> Joe's hight points were all his interviews
21:26 < Lulu> It's his strong suit.
21:28 < jokeefe> Today's Net Neutrality Rally went well
21:28 < jokeefe> thanks, Lulu
21:29 < Lulu> <3
21:29 < noe> I like events with set endpoints! Let's never do open
        ended events!
21:29 < Lulu> Jason gave out all the cards to the lingerers.
21:29 < jokeefe> very good turnout for the rain
21:29 < Lulu> Yes, our friend Laura wanted to come...
21:30 < Lulu> I think double would have come or more if it had been dry.
21:30 < srevilak> Summary of demonstration on bottom of
        https://masspirates.org/wiki/2014_Event_Notes
21:30 < srevilak> let me know if I missed anything
21:30 < jokeefe> didn't get a count, but I know we filled the steps by
the state house. Between 60 and 100
21:31 < kate_m> Are more Net Neutrality things in the works for the
        coming months?
21:31 < jokeefe> will update the notes, srevilak
21:31 < jokeefe> planning discussions is what I know
21:31 < noe> Sadly, I think there may be more events coming, especially
if the FCC does what we fear they will.
21:31 < srevilak> kate_m: possibly one in two weeks or so
21:31 < Lulu> Well anytime we talk about muni-net
21:32 < kate_m> two weeks is not a lot of time to plan
21:32 < Lulu> muni-net and net neutraltiy issues go hand in hand
21:32 < Kendra> This event was sort of last minute, but it seemed to
        work out.
21:32 < jokeefe> We pulled this one off in less than a week
21:32 < srevilak> https://twitter.com/hashtag/internetemergency
21:33 < noe> Key to making it succesful was keeping it simple, short
        and pleasant.
21:33 < jokeefe> alot of anoninmass pictures
21:33 < Lulu> Location matters too
21:34 < jokeefe> buttons helped as well
21:34 < noe> I'm sure some would be protesters got lost, unfortunately.
21:34 < Lulu> Two ppl politely mentioned that the state house is not
the best place after business hours
21:34 < Lulu> Im glad ppl like buttons!
21:34 < Lulu> I enjoy making them.
21:35 < Lulu> the press is slightly theraputic.
21:35 < Lulu> That time of day South Station would be good
21:35 < Lulu> Or park street.
21:35 < lisbon> ^ great ideas
21:36 < kate_m> Park street's great for flyering, I don't remember south
        station being fantastic during Occupy
21:36 < kate_m> but it's a good spot for signs
21:36 < noe> True. Park St gets congested quick, but Dewey Square
        (near South Station) could work.
21:36 < kate_m> especially if you can get them lit somehow
21:37 < Lulu> YES
21:37 < Lulu> What about the overpass brigade?
21:37 < Lulu> Jason brought them up on the way home...
21:37 < kate_m> Does anyone have a real plan for winning this fight?
21:37 < jokeefe> Downtown crossing has the AT&T/Verizon stores across
        from one another
21:37 < kate_m> I mean, education is key, but there has to be some kind
of gameplan for actually affecting change
21:37 < jokeefe> die ins at the FCC?
21:38 < kate_m> jokeefe: not it
21:38 < jokeefe> joking
21:38 < noe> Originally, we had assumed that the FCC would cave to
        popular opinion.
21:38 < lisbon> that failed terribly
21:38 < jokeefe> 96% of the comments wanted net neutrality
21:38 < kate_m> unfortunately
21:39 < Kendra> If you could get people to boycott the internet for a
full month in protest , though it would never happen. Problem is people
        are hooked.
21:39 < jokeefe> well we haven't heard what the final plan is, so we
don't know it failed, we only suspect it (I remain in hope)
21:39 < srevilak> protest in Wheeler's front yard?
21:39 < jokeefe> Putting pressure on Congress is one avenue, though that
        only goes so far
21:39 < Lulu> My plan is to fight for muni net
21:40 < srevilak> Old School Massachusetts direct action
21:40 < noe> I like that. I am down with hounding higher ups in the
        FCC. Peacefully.
21:40 < srevilak> You and 500 irate friends show up at an official's
house, and ask them to resign
21:40 < srevilak> And they resign
21:40 < kate_m> muni net is something we should all get behind
21:40 < srevilak> Very popular thing to do in 1774
21:40 < kate_m> but net neutrality needs to be set in fucking stone at
        every level of government
21:40 < Lulu> Show up at city council meetings demanding mini broad band
21:41 < Lulu> muni
21:41 < jokeefe> Suggest this issue be the topic of our conversation at
the Pirate Social on Sunday, 6pm, Asgard
21:41 < Lulu> Ho long is this?
21:41 < Lulu> Noe likes limits
21:41 < Lulu> :-)
21:41 < Kendra> 6pm-9pm
21:41 < Lulu> OK cool.
21:41 < kate_m> I can't do Sunday evening :(
21:41 < Lulu> That sucks.
21:41 < jokeefe> Lulu, best if we have a proposal that pays for itself.
The age of austerity doesn't like investing except in casinos (reall or
        Wall St. kind)
21:42 < noe> Yup! We've got 3 ideas: muni net, protesting specifically
at executive level FCC buttheads, and pressuring White House/Congress
21:42 < Lulu> Haven't seen you since June
21:42 < kate_m> I know! Life is butts
21:42 < Lulu> I am not accepting that joke.
21:42 < noe> Do you think we could get the casinos to pay for high
        speed internet?
21:42 < Lulu> not joke!
21:42 < Lulu> fucking autocorrect
21:43 < noe> They're already going to be paying for a ton of
        infrastructure anyway.
21:43 < Lulu> Fuck austerity
21:43 < jokeefe> Well there is the tax revenue
21:43 < kate_m> Actually, Springfield might get MGM to go for it
21:43 < Lulu> We need to keep recruiting candidates
21:43 < Lulu> local elections this coming year
21:43 < kate_m> they've already got a sweetheart deal out there and the
place got torn down pretty bad when the tornado came through
21:44 < noe> Lulu: austerity will not equal prosperity . . . for anyone
21:44 < Kendra> I think the cable companies kind of lost customers
with bad service and high fees. If you are paying more money for worse
internet service, my guess is that other services will be created
21:44 < Lulu> well in western ma my friends are all complaining...
21:44 < Lulu> about piss poor broad band
21:44 < Kendra> Or a boycott of the companies pushing for this
21:44 < Lulu> there is no way to boycott
21:44 < Kendra> Or go outside
21:44 < Lulu> they have the monopoly on delivery of servies
21:44 < noe> a real boycott would be creating it ourselves.
21:44 < Lulu> we have to threaten them with a "public option"
21:44 < Lulu> Like a meshnet...
21:45 < Lulu> that is is the only way to do it without involving govt
21:45 < jokeefe> I already boycott Comcast. Could ask folks to switch
        if they have choices
21:45 < jokeefe> Problem is no choices
21:45 < kate_m> I'm wary of "taking our ball and going home" solutions
21:45 < Kendra> That is what I am getting at, I guess it is in the mesh
net muni net vein, make your own system
21:45 < Lulu> ppl don't have choices
21:45 < kate_m> meshnet will help the folks who are already tech savvy,
but most of the public will scratch their heads and stick with commercial
        ISPs
21:45 < Lulu> 2 choices in this town com cast or verison
21:45 < Lulu> and we are the lucky ones!
21:46 < lisbon> I have been at discussions at various committe meetings
in my town, Ludlow, about creating a municipal fiber service
21:46 < Lulu> more boondocks towns in ma can't get either
21:46 < jokeefe> mesh/muni are both longer terms solutions
21:46 < Lulu> journey of a thousand miles
21:46 < srevilak> lisbon: what's your town talking about
21:46 < kate_m> muni I think is a better bet than trying to go it alone
21:46 < jokeefe> could do a combo of mesh & muni
21:46 < Lulu> i love hybrids
21:46 < Kendra> So there is a broader problem of education that should be
addressed, because the term net neutrality does not adequately describe
the problem for a broad audience
21:46 < jokeefe> muni for the trunk and mesh for the leaves
21:47 < Lulu> yes Kendra good point
21:47 < Kendra> but I am not sure if this should be discussed sunday
        before time isup
21:47 < lisbon> Its only in it's infancy, but a former Comcast worker
gave a presentation to the board last week about the idea
21:47 < Lulu> too many ppl don't even know what we are talking about
21:47 < kate_m> ultimately, you're probably still connecting to the
trunk somewhere along the line, so net neutrality is still an issue
21:47 < jokeefe> what did the person, say lisbon
21:47 < Lulu> yes and no... the telecoms have access to our internet at
        our pleasure.
21:47 < noe> kate_m: absolutely correct
21:47 < Lulu> the net belongs to the ppl
21:48 < Lulu> we paid to establish and expand it
21:48 < Lulu> and we over paid the tel comes for access to it
21:48 < jokeefe> kate_m: my point is that muni lays the main lines and
people run mesh nets off that.
21:48 < Kendra> This discussion is happening in Highland park around
        municipal networks
21:48 < Lulu> they have more than made back thousands of time over what
        they put into it
21:48 < lisbon> He and his counterpart essentially tried to explain why
it would be beneficial to create a municipal isp, and he went over the
costs and how it would benefit the town
21:49 < Lulu> good to know, Kendra
21:49 < jokeefe> Yes, we should point out how much money we have paid
gov & rate payers to subsidize ISPs.
21:49 < noe> lisbon: did people seem interested? or dubious?
21:49 < Lulu> A lot of the most assoc w muni net are....
21:49 < jokeefe> were there any handouts lisbon?
21:49 < Lulu> legal costs... fighting the utilities for access to
        the poles
21:49 < lisbon> but the commitee didn't get it, but he has scheduled to
        do another presentation soon
21:50 < lisbon> the few residents that were there, including my self
        seemed to like it
21:50 < jokeefe> please share when it is
21:50 < srevilak> lisbon: if you can get a copy of (or a link to) the
presentation, we'd love to see it
21:50 < lisbon> Comcast will be taking over Charter in my town and many
ludlow residents have heard of the horors of comcast and are reluctant
        to switch
21:51 < kate_m> jokeefe: even in a perfect world, sooner or later you're
going to want data from overseas or somewhere on the commercial internet,
and you'll have to negotiate those connections
21:51 < lisbon> I will see if I could attend his nest presentation and
        ask him
21:51 < kate_m> or we end up with two internets
21:51 < lisbon> *next
21:51 < noe> I agree with their horror.
21:52 < Kendra> http://www.muninetworks.org/tags-211
21:52 < Kendra>
        https://www.bostonherald.com/business/technology/technology_news/2014/11/boston_eyes_next_gen_networks
21:52 < jokeefe> agreed, kate_m, but they tend not to be the problem.
It is the ISPs with their access to customers that are.
21:52 < Lulu> agreed jokeefe
21:52 < jokeefe> thanks, Kendra
21:52 < jokeefe> We have eight minutes left and need to discuss PirateCon
2015 planning if we are to make progress on it
21:53 < jokeefe> wanted to id two things:
21:53 < jokeefe> 1. when / where we should have it (or at least when we
        shouldn't have it)
21:53 < jokeefe> 2. what topics should we look at getting people to
        speak on
21:54 < noe> 1. i'd say spring before the college students leave
21:54 < srevilak> jokeefe: at one point, we talked about setting up a
        survey for pirate con
21:54 < Lulu> Cory doctorow say he will speak for no fee if:
21:54 < Lulu> we schedule it for a time he is her in the northeast for
        a paid gig
21:54 < noe> (Also, we're doing Arisia in January, so we shouldn't do
        it in January)
21:54 < Lulu> and two we put him up in decent hotel
21:54 < srevilak> jokeefe: I'll draft a survey
21:54 < jokeefe> great!
21:55 < jokeefe> got time to show us how to do it at the social?
21:55 < Lulu> so i need to ask him what his schedule is looking like
21:55 < Lulu> good time to mention the elections to him... tyvm noe
        and jame
21:55 < Kendra> We should look at Simmons and Lesley, but MIT might be
an option too. I think late february early March
21:55 < Lulu> s
21:55 < srevilak> heh: fellow on radio is talking about US "Two party
        dictatorship"
21:55 < Lulu> Ahoy!
21:55 < jokeefe> ahoy itspara
21:56 < Lulu> I like MIT but it can be intimidating to the non technical
        types
21:56 < jokeefe> we are talking about PirateCon 2015 planning - agenda
        at https://masspirates.org/wiki/November_6th,_2014_IRC_Meeting
21:56 < Lulu> the new e 5 space is pretty big
21:56 < jokeefe> how big and does it have wheel chair access
21:56 < Lulu> Saw it last Saturday
21:57 < Lulu> no wheel chair access
21:57 < srevilak> jokeefe: no wheel chair access yet
21:57 < Lulu> hadn't thought of that...
21:57 < itspara> AHOY!
21:57 < noe> ahoy itspara
21:57 < jokeefe> any pictures of it?
21:57 < srevilak> jokeefe: I wouldn't mind holding it outside of boston.
