Summary

1. Freedom Rally tabling

  • Turn out was much higher than last year
  • Posted pictures to the blog
  • Lessons learned:
    • need to arrive an hour early to setup
    • need to train people better about tabling (perhaps we should have a "how to run a pirate party table" video
    • need 1/3 page fliers for these events since many of them end up on the ground, sadly.
    • need to get the thanks & pictures out closer to the event.
    • need an updated set of policies so we can have a better tabling presence with more stuff to hand out and more visual appeal. There was a lot to compete with.
    • A tent would have helped if it were pirate themed or if it caught people's eye.

Meeting Minutes

<nowiki>

[12:02] <jokeefe> hi mildbeard [12:02] <jokeefe> agenda at http://masspirates.org/wiki/index.php?title=September_20th,_2012_IRC_Meeting [12:03] <mildbeard> good afternoon (by 2 min...) [12:03] <jokeefe> SplendidSpoon is on a plane and won't be on [12:05] <mildbeard> k [12:06] <jokeefe> so what was your assessment of our effort at freedom rally? [12:06] <mildbeard> I thought it was awesome, and I hope we can get better at this and do a better job in the future too. [12:06] <mildbeard> How about you? [12:08] <jokeefe> i wasn't there as long as I wanted, but it seemed to go well. few things we can improve on 1) need to arrive an hour early to setup 2) need to train people better about tabling (perhaps we should have a "how to run a pirate party table" video. [12:08] <mildbeard> I completely agree. [12:09] <mildbeard> My son Reilly (age 10) came along and handed out way more fliers than me or anyone else at the time. We ran out of them. People seemed more willing to take a flier from a kid than from me. [12:09] <mildbeard> We left at 4:20 because I was afraid of the effect that the cloud of smoke might have on him. [12:09] <mildbeard> But he was no stranger than usual :). [12:10] <jokeefe> great. i think we need 1/3 page fliers for these events since many of them end up on the ground, sadly. [12:10] <jokeefe> also 3) need to get the thanks & pictures out closer to the event. [12:11] <mildbeard> I think another thing we can improve on would be having an updated set of policies and having a better tabling presence with more stuff to hand out and more visual appeal. There was a lot to compete with. [12:11] <jokeefe> Hope Reilly had fun [12:11] <mildbeard> Yeah, and he loved the ice cream I gave him as a reward for his efforts. I told him no brownies... [12:12] <jokeefe> lol agreed on the need for more info, a tent might have been nice or did the shadow of the building get longer as the day went on? [12:12] <jokeefe> also, I should have brought the big banner [12:13] <mildbeard> No the shadow didn't help much. Having a Pirate hat would have helped but I was too wiped out to dress up this time. [12:14] <jokeefe> so a tent might have helped? [12:16] <mildbeard> Well, I wasn't worried about comfort so much as visual appeal to attract people. A tent would have helped if it were pirate themed or if it caught people's eye. [12:16] <jokeefe> Good idea. [12:17] <jokeefe> So onto item 2 Visit by Gregory Engels of the PPDE/PPI [12:17] <jokeefe> Would you be able to make Oct 5th in the early evening? [12:17] <jokeefe> it is a friday? [12:17] <mildbeard> I sent Melanie an email confirming what we're doing at that time. I will be there if there's nothing I can't get out of. [12:18] <jokeefe> ok, DemoCenter is available then and I want to lock that down so we can start advertising it [12:18] <jokeefe> I put in a request to them. [12:18] <mildbeard> I will let you know as soon as she replies. [12:19] <jokeefe> okey dokey [12:19] <jokeefe> item 3. CryptoParty in Boston - Kit found us a place & date/time. looking for teachers [12:20] <jokeefe> want to talk about vpns? [12:20] <mildbeard> So what's up with that event? [12:20] <jokeefe> https://cryptoparty.org/wiki/Boston [12:21] <mildbeard> Who's talking about Tor? [12:22] <jokeefe> Steve from OBIT is slated. One of the Tor folks offered to help on any topic [12:24] <mildbeard> Well, how much of an expert does someone have to be to do one of these things? [12:25] <jokeefe> enough not to give the wrong info [12:27] <mildbeard> I don't see anything on file sharing. [12:28] <jokeefe> we can add it [12:28] <jokeefe> we have six hours [12:29] <mildbeard> I would like to talk about that, since it's one of the leakiest and least secure things. [12:29] <mildbeard> I think I already screened the time, let me get back to you if I'm wrong about 10/21. [12:30] <mildbeard> dude, there's an online cryptoparty next Wednesday. [12:30] <mildbeard> It's a live stream with irc. [12:31] <mildbeard> 8pm BST is the afternoon here. [12:31] <mildbeard> Might be a good way to gain experience. [12:32] <jokeefe> got a link? [12:33] <mildbeard> https://cryptoparty.org/wiki/Online [12:35] <jokeefe> kewl [12:39] <jokeefe> So, item 4 - Finding a new treasurer - Lucia said she might be interested in being our treasurer [12:39] <mildbeard> awesome. I finally met her at the rally. [12:41] <jokeefe> The filing date for the 08/20/2012 - 10/19/2012 is 10/29/2012 [12:41] <jokeefe> so need to be switched over well before then. [12:43] <jokeefe> on 5. Ballot Questions, Platform, LQFB - I haven't been able to do anything about it [12:43] <jokeefe> too busy with the latest events [12:43] <mildbeard> yep [12:44] <jokeefe> :-) [12:45] <jokeefe> Also, haven't been able to deal with Travis accomodations. When was he suggesting he would visit? [12:47] <mildbeard> He will apparently be in NY next week on Wed during the next PNC meeting. I haven't heard from him, and Melanie has reservations about having people stay here. [12:47] <mildbeard> I think he was going to NY first. [12:47] <[4Q]> !op [12:47] == mode/#masspirates [+o [4Q]] by ChanServ [12:48] <mildbeard> hmm [12:48] <mildbeard> !op [12:48] <mildbeard> lmao [12:48] == mode/#masspirates [+ooo mildbeard bsod jokeefe] by [4Q] [12:48] == mode/#masspirates [+v feedbot] by [4Q] [12:48] <@bsod> sry, connection dropped [12:49] == bsod has changed nick to [bsod] [12:49] == [bsod] [~bsod@iywk-6-2-7h-nf-90-v5.cpe.townisp.com] has quit [Changing host] [12:49] == [bsod] [~bsod@xx.pirate] has joined #masspirates [12:49] == mode/#masspirates [+o [bsod]] by stockholm-se.pirateirc.net [12:49] == mode/#masspirates [+o [bsod]] by [4Q] [12:49] == mode/#masspirates [+v [bsod]] by [4Q] [12:49] <@jokeefe> hi bsod! [12:52] <@[bsod]> before i go [12:52] <@jokeefe> yes, Sat, the 6th I have conflicts [12:53] <@mildbeard> [bsod], dunno [12:53] <@[bsod]> heh [12:53] <@[bsod]> hes from western mass or something [12:53] <@mildbeard> Also I am available the 21st for the crypto party. [12:53] <@jokeefe> great! [12:53] <@jokeefe> gotta figure out what we can video of that. [12:54] <@[bsod]> i have no idea what im available, if there's a posted plan ill see if i can work it at the last minute [12:54] <@[bsod]> as usual [12:54] <@jokeefe> k, and where to put said video since it isnt a MAPP event [12:54] == mode/#masspirates [+o ageis] by [4Q] [12:55] <@mildbeard> I think we can still put it on YouTube under MassPirates. Don't you? [12:56] <@mildbeard> I can record a video if there's adequate lighting. [12:56] <@jokeefe> need a better mic, too [12:57] <@jokeefe> So, should be able to focus on LQFB when the events are properly baked. [12:57] <@jokeefe> I started a Other items on the todo list on the agenda [12:57] <@mildbeard> Sure. There's nothing we need to do with LQFB beyond sending out messages telling everyone to use it and who to ask for an invite code. [12:58] <@mildbeard> Do you want to hear about the PNC? [12:58] <@jokeefe> probably should setup a form for folks to sign up for it. [12:58] <@mildbeard> yeah [12:58] <@jokeefe> any other suggestions for the todo list before we talk about nat news? [12:59] <@mildbeard> I'd like to email you a list of ideas for things to go on a new flier. [12:59] <@jokeefe> email it to me, SplendidSpoon and Jeanne. [13:00] <@jokeefe> those need to be updated. [13:00] <@mildbeard> k [13:00] <@jokeefe> will send the todo list to the email list as well for comment [13:00] <@jokeefe> what's up nationally? [13:00] <@mildbeard> We passed two new amendments to the USPP constitution. [13:01] <@mildbeard> The first was just a wording change to one of the core values. It doesn't really change the intent, but makes it clearer what it means. California had objected to it, and their objection made it clear that the intent was ambiguous. So it's better now. [13:02] <@mildbeard> The second was that officers (Captain, First Officer, Quartermaster) don't have to be in a full member state. They just have to be active in pirate politics. [13:02] <@jokeefe> k [13:03] <@mildbeard> They are hoping to have a PNC convention in October. The original date was October 3 but it looks too early. [13:03] <@mildbeard> That's pretty much everything. [13:04] <@jokeefe> on-line? [13:04] <@mildbeard> yeah, not an in-person thing! [13:04] <@mildbeard> I can't afford the air fare... [13:05] <@jokeefe> nor i [13:06] <@jokeefe> how are the other states doing? [13:06] <@mildbeard> California is active but they have stopped sending a rep to PNC meetings. [13:06] <@mildbeard> Wisconsin is actually pretty active. NY too. [13:06] <@mildbeard> Florida seems to be just Rush and Washington rarely shows up. Brady came yesterday. [13:07] <@mildbeard> Oregon is coming regularly. [13:07] <@mildbeard> Sacha is the acting Quartermaster and now rarely gets embroiled in controversy. [13:07] <@mildbeard> Georgia has someone for part of most meetings. [13:08] <@mildbeard> Can't think of any others. We have several observer states working on getting themselves organized. [13:09] <@jokeefe> Sigh. Well at least we are moving a head [13:09] <@jokeefe> and our tails [13:09] <@jokeefe> some legs ... [13:10] <@mildbeard> yeah. It's a slow trudge. [13:11] <@jokeefe> we are more active than in 2011 which was more active than 2010. all in all I am hopeful. Still would like to see 160 signed up to be state rep. candidates for 2014. A guy can dream. [13:12] <@jokeefe> that is all I have. [13:13] <@mildbeard> me too. I'm with you - I think that this gets bigger as long as we simply keep showing up. [13:14] <@jokeefe> :-) [13:14] <@jokeefe> so motion to adjourn then [13:14] <@mildbeard> second [13:14] <@jokeefe> all in favor [13:15] <@mildbeard> aye [13:15] <@jokeefe> aye [13:15] <@jokeefe> motion carries
