We have some exciting events we are organizing or will be a part of during this Summer. But first …
Meet your new Captain and First Officer
At our last weekly IRC meeting, we adopted our new Articles of Agreement and Code of Conduct. We also elected acting Cap’n James O’Keefe of Somerville and acting 1st Officer Jeremy (J. P.) Hollembaek of Lowell. You can reach James at jokeefe at jamesokeefe dot org and J.P. at jphollembaek at gmail dot com. Both will serve until we hold elections under the new Articles of Agreement. Also, the Party needs a member to be our treasurer, so if you are interested, please contact us. We welcome your comments and help.
Our focus is on starting local chapters, identifying candidates for the 2012 elections and fighting bills such as the PROTECT IP Act. Our next IRC meeting today, June 13th at 9:30pm will be about planning for the 2012 election. To join us, go to the Organizing section on the right column of the blog and follow the instructions.
Summer Fun
This Wednesday, June 15th, 6-8pm, we are joining with a new student-run group called Civic Counsel to organize a rally opposing the pending grand jury targeting Wikileaks and its supporters. It will start at 6pm and will be outside Boston City Hall in Government Center. You can find out about the event at this page, and you can tell Civic Counsel that you will attend at their Facebook event. Please spread the word far and wide.
On Saturday, July 16th, 1-3pm, we will be handing out flyers and signing up new pirates at Art Beat in Somerville. Art Beat is a long-running arts festival in Somerville and it will be a good place to tell folks about the Pirate Party. If you want to help us out please email us at info@masspirates.org.
On Saturday, July 23rd, noon-6pm, we are joining with Boston Freedom of Information to host the 2011 Pirate Picnic on George’s Island in Boston Harbor. We will be taking the noon ferry from the Boston Long Wharf-North landing and will be there until 6pm. We will have a picnic, games, costume contests, as well political discussion and trainings. We want to know what activities you want to see so either tells on our Facebook event page or email us at info@masspirates.org. Please tell us if you will be at the picnic so we can get a head count. It will be a great afternoon of geek politics, activism, and fun. We hope you can make it!
Can’t make these events…
… but want to help? Visit our Help Build the Party page for info on common questions about our issues, an organizing guide, and our latest flyer. Don’t see something you need? Just send us email at info@masspirates.org.
Update on the PROTECT IP Act
Senator Wyden’s hold on the PROTECT IP Act is still going on, so we still have time to stop the PROTECT IP Act. From what we have found out, no Representative or Senator has announced they are supporting or opposing the bill. If you haven’t contacted your Representative or Senator yet, please visit our recent post on it for how you can do so and spread the word to your friends.
We know the Summer will be an exciting time to be a Pirate, especially with your help!
Thanks!
James O’Keefe and J.P. Hollembaek
