Community mesh networks such as NYC Mesh, Guifi.net in Spain and Freifunk in Germany have already shown we can build a community ISP. This Wednesday, 1/31, during the Somerville Cryptoparty, is a discussion on how we can move forward with developing a community mesh network in the Boston area. It will be from 6-9pm at The Sprouts, 339R Summer Street, Somerville. The Sprouts is in the garage in the back of the drive way. Unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible. On Saturday, February 10th, there will be a Community Meshnet Workshop from 1-4pm at the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Ave, Somerville. The Somerville Public Library is wheelchair accessible. Please download and put up this this flyer for the February workshop that the Somerville Cryptoparty put together. You can also share the Somerville Cryptoparty page or the February Facebook event. Hope you can make it and please spread the word about these events. Thanks! The FCC has changed the rules to end net neutrality. The fight continues in Congress and the courts. Thankfully the Massachusetts delegation supports net neutrality and there are state and national groups bringing court challenges. You can even get an app to see whether your internet connection is being throttled or censored. Most people have few if any choices for their ISP and they seldom can choose an ISP which is pro-net neutrality. Additionally, because of the lack of competition, ISPs are way too expensive compared to many other advanced economy countries. We can change that! Community mesh networks such as NYC Mesh, Guifi.net in Spain and Freifunk in Germany have already shown it can be done. Two upcoming meetings will discuss how we can move forward with developing a community mesh network in the Boston area: 1/31, 6-9pm, Somerville Cryptoparty, The Sprouts, 339R Summer Street, Somerville 2/10, 1-4pm, Community Meshnet Workshop, Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Ave, Somerville The Somerville Cryptoparty folks put together a flyer for the February workshop that we hope you will put up in your neighborhood. Section 702 is a surveillance authority passed in 2008 as part of the FISA Amendments Act. It is used to justify the NSA’s warrantless collection of our emails and other on-line communications. Section 702 has to be renewed every few years, but it wasn’t renewed at the end of 2017 and expired. Win one for us. The House is debating whether to reauthorize Section 702 and expand illegal government spying programs, or pass the USA Rights Act Amendment which would end the warrantless surveillance of Americans. The vote is soon. Now is the time to contact your House member (and Senators) and tell them to oppose the FISA 702 reauthorization and to support the USA Rights Act Amendment. You can find contact info for the Massachusetts delegation at our wiki. You can also tweet at them, but calls this morning are best. You can follow the debate at: https://www.house.gov/watch-houselive Thanks!published under Main Topic, Surveillance | Comments Off on Section 702 renewal up for vote now, call your US Reps.
