SUMMARY:Tell Clark: No AI Mass Surveillance!
DESCRIPTION:Digital Fourth and QuitGPT will protest outside the offices of Rep. Katherine Clark in Malden to demand that she oppose extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)\, specifically Section 702. As long time proponents of ending illegal government surveillance\, we support this protest. \nFISA 702 permits warrantless government access to people’s communications\, including US persons; it permits warrantless acquisition of people’s commercially available information (location data\, browsing data\, demographic and other sensitive data)\, and\, because AI is new\, a law passed in 2008 doesn’t address the problem of AI vastly accelerating the government’s power to ingest data and surface real or hallucinated “insights” on who’s a threat. \nIn 2013\, Rep. Clark explicitly pledged to support “an individualized warrant based on probable cause before the government can search someone’s email.”  She turned her back on that pledge and has whipped Democrats to support expanded warrantless surveillance in 2024. \nCome out to help them! The protest will be in front of her district office at 157 Pleasant St #4\, Malden\, MA 02148. It is a short walk from the Malden Center Orange Line MBTA stop\, the Jackson Street Parking Garage and Pleasant Street Parking Lot. \nThey will have signs if you don’t have your own. SUMMARY:Forensic Snake Oil: Shotspotter Is Untrustworthy and Dangerous
DESCRIPTION:Join for a startling look at a surveillance system already in use in Cambridge and financed by money from the Department of Homeland Security. Shotspotter is an acoustic surveillance technology that the City of Cambridge has deployed to detect gunshots. While this may sound beneficial on the surface\, there are serious concerns about how this technology impacts our community—particularly communities of color. \nThis event is hosted by First Parish Church in Cambridge\, The Black Response and the Stop ShotSpotter Coalition. DESCRIPTION:The Black Response will host a community education workshop on ShotSpotter. This is the third event in a series. We encourage all Pirate Party supporters to attend this presentation. The community dinner is a potluck\, so please bring some food to share. \nThe event will feature presentations by Gabriel Rojas\, University of Chicago doctoral candidate\, and Valerie Werder\, a doctoral candidate at Harvard University. Gabriel Rojas has conducted extensive research on ShotSpotter in Chicago. His presentation will examine the history of SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter)\, the logic and strategies for ShotSpotter’s implementation\, and the legal and affective harms associated with the ShotSpotter system. \nValerie Werder’s research critically examines police body camera footage. She explores the financialization of police body cameras\, their implementation and governing protocols\, and notably\, the contractual terms surrounding data and access of police body cameras and footage. Her presentation will also reflect on the City of Boston’s 2013 contract with the corporation (then known as) ShotSpotter as well as a speculative analysis of how the ShotSpotter data might be used if the devices\, the data\, and financialization follows the trajectory of police body cameras. Please join us for a thought provoking set of presentations.  \n\n\n\nThe Cambridge Community Center is at 5 Callendar Street\, Cambridge. DESCRIPTION:We are electing our Pirate Council in February. Positions include Captain\, First Officer\, Quartermaster\, PR/Media Director\, Activism Director\, Swarmwise Director\, Web/Info Director\, three Arbitrators and two representatives to the US Pirate Party. \nIf you are interested in throwing your hat in for any of these positions\, nominations are open on-line until end of day Friday\, January 30th. Before you do\, become a member\, join our activists email list\, and read our Articles of Agreement and Code of Conduct. \nBallots will be sent out by February 13th and are due back by February 27th. We will use the same voting mechanism we used in our previous election. Voters will be emailed a randomly generated id that only the voter will know. Once the election is done\, we will delete the ids. In this way\, we can ensure that only supporters can vote\, while also maintaining the secrecy of votes. \nWe look forward to multiple candidates for all positions.

DESCRIPTION:The Cambridge Public Safety Committee will review whether to roll out Flock surveillance cameras on December 9\, 2025 at noon to 2pm. It will be in the Sullivan Chamber of Cambridge City Hall at 795 Massachusetts Avenue. You can participate in person or via Zoom. After this meeting\, the committee’s proposal will go back to the city council. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to provide public comment\, you can use their public comment sign up form to sign up. The meeting can be viewed on the city’s open meeting portal. Cambridge residents may also view on Channel 22-City View Local Access. \n\n\n\nWe especially encourage Cambridge Pirates to speak out at the meeting.

SUMMARY:The Criminalization of Self-Defense
DESCRIPTION:The Black Response and Impact Boston will present The Criminalization of Self-Defense\, a community education event on Thursday\, November 20\, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM at The Community Art Center in Cambridge\, MA. We are proud to be one of the sponsors of it. Please register in advance. \n\n\n\nIt is a free and public gathering that will explore how self-defense is criminalized\, particularly for Black\, Brown\, and marginalized survivors\, and how communities can reclaim safety through resistance\, advocacy\, and care. \n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers will be: \n\n\n\n\nProf. Alisa Bierria – Survived and Punished / UCLA\n\n\n\nMeg Stone – Impact Boston\n\n\n\nKishana Smith-Osei – Massachusetts Women of Color Network\n\n\n\nLea Kayali – Palestinian Youth Movement Boston\n\n\n\n\nThe Community Art Center is at 119 Windsor Street\, Cambridge. It is a nine minute walk from Central Square and the MBTA Red Line stop there. \n \nFREE food and childcare will be provided. TBR will collect food donations for the network of free Community Fridges. Please bring nonperishable food items to contribute. More details are available.

DESCRIPTION:We will hold a Pirate Meetup at the Boston Anarchist Book Fair on November 1-2 at the Cambridge Community Center. We will start at noon on both days and want you to join us! \nWe will meet at the 5 Callender Street entrance to the Cambridge Community Center. As part of the meetup\, we will divide up the area around the Community Center and go searching for Ring and other cameras to add to our Surveillance Camera Map. We mapped some of the cameras in the area and expect there will be more. \nFill out our form to tell us you will be there. \nThe Cambridge Community Center is an eleven minute walk from the Central Square\, Cambridge. Central Square is accessible by the Red Line MBTA stop and multiple bus routes.

DESCRIPTION:We are proud to sponsor The Abolition and Alternatives Conference (AAC) on October 3–5. The conference is organized and hosted by The Black Response at their offices at 245 Main Street\, Cambridge\, MA\, 02142. We encourage all Pirates to attend and support this conference\, especially\, but not exclusively\, the ShotSpotter and Police Surveillance track. If you can not attend\, or even if you can\, please consider giving a donation to The Black Response or print out their poster and put it up in your neighborhood. See you in less than two weeks! \n\n\n\nDetails on the conference are reproduced below. Edits are only for clarity: \n\n\n\nThis free\, in-person event will bring together community members\, organizers\, and advocates for a weekend of in-depth learning and discussion focused on alternative public safety and community care\, housing justice\, and the impacts of surveillance technologies like ShotSpotter. It will include keynote addresses from Fatema Ahmad (Muslim Justice League)\, Stephanie Guirand (The Black Response)\, and Spencer Piston (Boston University). \n\n\n\nFood will be provided\, childcare will be available\, and we encourage attendees to share any additional access needs via the conference interest form. TBR will be reaching out to invite participation as speakers and facilitators. For questions\, please contact Stephanie at general@theblackresponsecambridge.com. \n\n\n\nThroughout the conference\, participants will have the opportunity to choose from panels in four tracks: \n\n\n\nHousing Justice \n\n\n\nThis track features panels led by the Cambridge Housing Justice Coalition (CHJC). CHJC is a coalition of activist groups and concerned Cambridge residents who believe housing is a basic human right. The panels and workshops on this track will focus on housing justice and its intersections with the prison industrial complex. \n\n\n\nShotSpotter and Police Surveillance \n\n\n\nThis track will be led by the #StopShotSpotter Coalition Camberville. In this track\, coalition members will provide an introduction to ShotSpotter\, the audio-surveillance technology. We will examine its impact in Cambridge\, the national landscape\, and broader conversations about surveillance tech. \n\n\n\nAlternatives and Community Care \n\n\n\nThis track will be led by members of the Massachusetts Community Care Network (MCCN). This track will include panels of responders\, program directors\, and organizers working to make alternatives to policing real. It includes a panel on the movement with Daanika Gordon\, Spencer Piston\, and Minali Aggarwal. \n\n\n\nCommunity Concerns (Anti-Racism\, Immigration Justice\, Justice for Palestine\, and Black Lives Matter) \n\n\n\nThis track will discuss concerns that come directly from the communities we serve and work with. These concerns also intersect with the movement for abolition and alternatives. They include Justice for Palestine\, Immigration Justice\, and Anti-Racism. In this tract we intend to learn from organizers leading these movements in Massachusetts.
