{"id":211,"date":"2011-02-10T05:06:40","date_gmt":"2011-02-10T10:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.masspirates.org\/blog\/?p=211"},"modified":"2011-02-10T05:06:40","modified_gmt":"2011-02-10T10:06:40","slug":"keating-lynch-and-tsongas-vote-to-extend-patriot-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2011\/02\/10\/keating-lynch-and-tsongas-vote-to-extend-patriot-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Keating, Lynch and Tsongas vote to extend Patriot Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, the US House of Representatives had a fast-tracked <a href=\"http:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/evs\/2011\/roll026.xml\" target=\"_blank\">vote<\/a> on whether to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomas.gov\/cgi-bin\/query\/z?c112:H.R.514:\" target=\"_blank\">renew<\/a> several troubling provisions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/wiki\/USA_PATRIOT_Act\" target=\"_blank\">USA PATRIOT Act<\/a>.\u00a0 The law has increased the government&#8217;s ability to spy on us without increasing oversight to make sure the FBI and other agencies are not abusing these powers.\u00a0 The fast-track vote required a two thirds vote and, thankfully, failed.\u00a0 Most of the Massachusetts delegation voted against the bill, but Representatives Keating, Lynch and Tsongas voted in favor of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact your Representatives to thank them for voting against the bill, or Keating, Lynch and Tsongas to tell them that they should stand up for the privacy of all Americans and against government surveillance in the next vote <em>which is expected shortly<\/em>.
