{"id":3214,"date":"2014-11-18T17:30:02","date_gmt":"2014-11-18T22:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/?p=3214"},"modified":"2014-11-18T17:31:52","modified_gmt":"2014-11-18T22:31:52","slug":"oppose-the-usa-freedom-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2014\/11\/18\/oppose-the-usa-freedom-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Oppose the USA Freedom Act!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The original USA Freedom Act had some merit.\u00a0 Then the House watered it down.\u00a0 Now the Senate is considering voting on a less watered down version.\u00a0 Either way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emptywheel.net\/2014\/11\/12\/why-i-dont-support-usa-freedom-act\/\">it isn&#8217;t enough<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The USA Freedom Act would give providers immunity, wouldn&#8217;t stop bulk collection of data and will extend Section 215 and other major provisions of the PATRIOT Act for another two years.\u00a0 What little transparency and oversight it requires just not strong enough.  Now we hear that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20141118\/03244829175\/harry-reid-wants-to-attach-part-sopa-to-surveillance-reform-bill.shtml\">felony streaming part of the SOPA bill will be added<\/a>.  A lot more we don&#8217;t like can get added if this bill gets to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I urge you to call Senator Elizabeth Warren at (202) 224-4543 and Senator Ed Markey (202) 224-2742 tonight and urge them to oppose this bill.
