{"id":3218,"date":"2014-11-19T13:30:23","date_gmt":"2014-11-19T18:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/?p=3218"},"modified":"2014-11-19T13:07:54","modified_gmt":"2014-11-19T18:07:54","slug":"usa-freedom-act-is-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2014\/11\/19\/usa-freedom-act-is-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"USA Freedom Act is Dead, Section 215 Next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The watered down USA Freedom Act did not clear the Senate yesterday, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_lists\/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=113&amp;session=2&amp;vote=00282\">Senators Warren and Markey voted for its cloture motion<\/a>. Back in May, Representatives, <a href=\"http:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/evs\/2014\/roll230.xml\">Kennedy, Lynch, and Tsongas voted for<\/a> the even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/113th-congress\/house-bill\/3361\">worse House version<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We appreciate the effort that the EFF, ACLU and other civil liberties organizations put into getting this bill passed. Unfortunately, the likely final bill would have made mass surveillance more acceptable and wouldn&#8217;t have done enough to end it.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emptywheel.net\/2014\/11\/18\/only-remaining-senate-target-of-terrorist-attack-still-believes-in-constitution\/\">Republican histrionics that this bill would have helped terrorists<\/a> was a wonder to watch.\u00a0 The fact that the NSA&#8217;s mass surveillance of everyone on the planet hasn&#8217;t stopped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-switch\/wp\/2013\/12\/23\/obama-cant-point-to-a-single-time-the-nsa-call-records-program-prevented-a-terrorist-attack\/\">a<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/17\/would-you-believe-zero-terrorist-attacks\">single<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/blog\/youll-never-guess-how-many-terrorist-plots-the-nsas-domestic-spy-program-has-foiled\">terrorist<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/nsa-phone-spying-is-useless-in-preventing-terrorist-att-1500194959\">attack<\/a> is lost on the nattering nabobs who will soon control the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which is one of the supports for such mass surveillance programs, expires next year.\u00a0 If the USA Freedom Act had passed, we wouldn&#8217;t see that fine day until 2017, sixteen years after it was put in place.\u00a0 While the Senate and House leadership will attempt to renew it, it is up to us to make sure they don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The watered down USA Freedom Act did not clear the Senate yesterday, though Senators Warren and Markey voted for its cloture motion.
