“There\u2019s been a lot of talk about the financial cost of hosting the 2024 Olympics in Boston, but very few people have discussed what might happen to our civil liberties if the international games come to town. Unfortunately, history and the projected budgeting for policing and surveillance suggest the civil liberties impact on the city and region would be substantial. What exactly might $2 billion in \u2018security\u2019 spending do to Boston, for the games and for the city\u2019s future?<\/p>\n
Kade Crockford is the director of the Technology for Liberty project at the ACLU of Massachusetts. Her writing on surveillance and policing has featured in The Guardian, The Nation, The Boston Globe, and WBUR.
