{"id":3532,"date":"2015-04-18T22:42:35","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T02:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/?p=3532"},"modified":"2015-04-18T22:42:35","modified_gmt":"2015-04-19T02:42:35","slug":"stop-fast-track-in-congress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2015\/04\/18\/stop-fast-track-in-congress\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop Fast Track in Congress!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Already oppose Fast Track, TPP &amp; TTIP? <a href=\"#calltoday\">Help stop them!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20150416\/13475530676\/congress-finally-releases-fast-track-trade-bill-mess.shtml\">Congressional leaders put forward<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizen.org\/fast-track-2015\">a bill to &#8220;Fast Track&#8221;<\/a> the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deals.<\/p>\n<p>If passed, TPP &amp; TTIP would enshrine some of the worst proposals corporations and the entertainment industry have put forward. These treaties would criminalize copyright infringement and include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stronger DRM and \u201ctechnological protection measure\u201d regimes;<\/li>\n<li>Make ISPs liable for copyright infringement on their networks;<\/li>\n<li>Implement a \u201ctake it down first, argue later\u201d DMCA-like process for notifying copyright infringements;<\/li>\n<li>allow corporations to patent plants and animals;<\/li>\n<li>potentially ban you from selling a product you bought abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both trade agreements would put in place or expand Investor State Dispute Settlements (ISDS) that allow corporations to challenge our laws if they at all hinder their present or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20131213\/09200625558\/how-corporate-sovereignty-lets-companies-ignore-national-laws-with-creative-lawyering.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">potential profits<\/a>. It has already\u00a0happened in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20150216\/17390930032\/john-oliver-highlights-ridiculousness-corporate-sovereignty-provisions.shtml\">Australia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20130913\/11204224509\/eli-lilly-officially-sues-canada-because-canada-rejected-patent-that-unfairly-diminishes-eli-lillys-profits.shtml\">Canada<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20131028\/10170325035\/how-much-does-gold-plated-corporate-sovereignty-cost-about-2-developing-countrys-gdp.shtml\">Costa Rica<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20131213\/09200625558\/how-corporate-sovereignty-lets-companies-ignore-national-laws-with-creative-lawyering.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Ecuador<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizen.org\/RDC-vs-Guatemala\">Guatemala<\/a>. With TPP and TTIP, we\u00a0will be next.<\/p>\n<p>These are\u00a0massive trade agreements that will impact our laws covering copyright, patents and our ability to regulate corporations. So far, the agreement has been negotiated in secret, save for a small army of \u201ccorporate advisers\u201d. \u00a0We only know about some of what is in it because of <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/tpp-ip2\/\">various<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/tpp-investment\/\">leaks<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/tisa-financial\/\">by<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/tpp-enviro\/\">Wikileaks<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/shared\/bsp\/hi\/pdfs\/26_02_2015_ttip.pdf\">others<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fast track effectively means that Congress will pass the agreement as the executive branch has negotiated it, without debate, and without giving the public the opportunity to weigh in. Since the negotiations have been conducted in secret, there\u2019s no way our legislators could possibly know what they\u2019re agreeing to. \u00a0In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/tpp-investment\/press.html\">some of sections of the TPP are to be kept secret for four years after adoption<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These treaties are not about about trade. Whether with copyright, patents, DRM or corporate rights, they are simply tools to increase the power and profits of corporations at our expense.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"calltoday\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Call your Senators and House Rep. and tell them to oppose Fast Track<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obama is promoting these horrid treaties, so simple majorities in both houses are needed for Congress to pass Fast Track. \u00a0In this case, every vote counts.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, much of the Mass. delegation questions the need for Fast Track, but\u00a0we cannot trust that they will stand up for us.
