{"id":3733,"date":"2015-06-18T23:00:33","date_gmt":"2015-06-19T03:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/?p=3733"},"modified":"2015-06-18T22:46:48","modified_gmt":"2015-06-19T02:46:48","slug":"house-sacrifices-workers-and-citizens-to-gods-of-corporate-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2015\/06\/18\/house-sacrifices-workers-and-citizens-to-gods-of-corporate-power\/","title":{"rendered":"House sacrifices workers and citizens to gods of corporate power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The House <a href=\"http:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/evs\/2015\/roll374.xml\">voted<\/a>\u00a0218 to 208 for give the president Fast Trade trade power and a limit their control over our trade policy to a simple up or down vote. \u00a0The bill now goes to the Senate which had passed a more complex bill that provided limited compensation to workers displaced by trade.<\/p>\n<p>From the documents that Wikileaks leaked on <a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/tpp\/\">TransPacific Partnership (TPP)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/tisa\/\">Trade in Services Agreement (TISA)<\/a>, we know that these treaties would:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>governments would be prevented from using Free Software:<\/li>\n<li>impose stronger DRM and \u201ctechnological protection measure\u201d regimes;<\/li>\n<li>make ISPs liable for copyright infringement on their networks;<\/li>\n<li>implement a \u201ctake it down first, argue later\u201d DMCA-like process for notifying copyright infringements;<\/li>\n<li>allow corporations to patent plants and animals;<\/li>\n<li>potentially ban you from selling a product you bought abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These trade agreements would put in place or expand Investor State Dispute Settlements (ISDS) that allow corporations to challenge our laws if they at all hinder their present or <a class=\"extern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20131213\/09200625558\/how-corporate-sovereignty-lets-companies-ignore-national-laws-with-creative-lawyering.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">potential profits<\/a>. It has already\u00a0happened in <a class=\"extern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20150216\/17390930032\/john-oliver-highlights-ridiculousness-corporate-sovereignty-provisions.shtml\">Australia<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"extern\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20130913\/11204224509\/eli-lilly-officially-sues-canada-because-canada-rejected-patent-that-unfairly-diminishes-eli-lillys-profits.shtml\">Canada<\/a>, <a class=\"extern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20131028\/10170325035\/how-much-does-gold-plated-corporate-sovereignty-cost-about-2-developing-countrys-gdp.shtml\">Costa Rica<\/a>, <a class=\"extern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20131213\/09200625558\/how-corporate-sovereignty-lets-companies-ignore-national-laws-with-creative-lawyering.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Ecuador<\/a> and\u00a0<a class=\"extern\" href=\"http:\/\/www.citizen.org\/RDC-vs-Guatemala\">Guatemala<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Mexico and Canada used the NAFTA ISDS process to penalize the US for meat labeling laws.
