{"id":5385,"date":"2017-11-09T12:00:42","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T17:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/?p=5385"},"modified":"2017-11-08T21:35:16","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T02:35:16","slug":"sesta-halted-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2017\/11\/09\/sesta-halted-for-now\/","title":{"rendered":"SESTA halted, but the fight isn&#8217;t over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20171108\/09325038576\/will-sheryl-sandberg-facebook-help-small-websites-threatened-sesta.shtml\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Commerce Committee voted<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/senate-bill\/1693\/all-actions?q=%7B%22senate-committees%22%3A%22all%22%7D\">SESTA (S.1693) out of Committee<\/a>.\u00a0<span>SESTA would partially repeal\u00a0<a class=\"extern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/issues\/cda230\">section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA230)<\/a>\u00a0in the case of sex trafficking. CDA230 is what prevents Internet service providers from being sued by what people post on their sites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2017\/11\/07\/protect-the-open-web-today\/\">SESTA would upend CDS230<\/a> by making sites liable for the what users post on them or how they use the service. It would allow sites to be sued or even face criminal charges for facilitating, a vague term, sex trafficking. It would favor wealthy companies with large monitoring infrastructures and lawyers and likely would not help fight sex trafficking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Senator Ron Wyden also announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/wyden-issues-warning-about-sesta\">he is placing a public hold on the bill<\/a>. His action stops SESTA for now, but it will be back. We have to win over the Senate and make sure this bill never succeeds.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Ed Markey is on the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation committee, but we haven&#8217;t found how he voted yet. We need contact Senators Warren and Markey and show them how harmful\u00a0 SESTA would be to the Internet.
