While <a href=\"https:\/\/masspirates.org\/blog\/2017\/10\/27\/you-killed-the-wiretapping-expansion\/\">we convinced the Senate to oppose the wiretap amendments, 22 to 14<\/a>, now the House will have a go.\u00a0 Three amendments (<a href=\"https:\/\/warrantless.org\/2017\/11\/call-your-rep-ma-house-republicans-try-to-pass-wiretap-expansion-the-senate-rejected\/\" target=\"new\">#53, #115 and #174<\/a>) would give prosecutors unprecedented new powers to wiretap phone calls, emails, instant messaging services, and other electronic devices.<\/p>\n<p>However, these bills would also expand who could be wiretapped. As <a href=\"https:\/\/warrantless.org\/2017\/11\/call-your-rep-ma-house-republicans-try-to-pass-wiretap-expansion-the-senate-rejected\/\" target=\"new\">Restore the 4th Massachusetts noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Amendments #53 and #174 are especially pernicious, in expanding wiretaps to cover interceptions enabled by \u201cpen register\u201d orders; this could greatly expand ordinary people\u2019s vulnerability to surveillance just by communicating with someone whose communications are considered relevant to a crime.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The House is debating these amendments today and tomorrow with votes likely by Wednesday.
