==== Topics & Speakers ====

A talk on using whatever GitLaw like platform we adopt would be good.

==== Logistics ====

js0000 said he would help with the conference wifi.

=== Legislation ===

Started a review of [http://www.malegislature.gov/Bills/188/Senate/S796 An Act updating privacy protections for personal electronic information], but since it consisted only of the changes and not what is being changed, it proved to be more difficult to tackle it in a half an hour.

Discussion ensued about what tools we could use to track such diffs.  They included:

* Setting up a [https://github.com/|Github] account since they are free for public items.
* Setting up a git server on our new hosting service
* Using [https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gitosis|Gitosis]
* Using [http://www.generalwill.org/|General Will], which was done by some Occupy Boston folks

Some tools we found:

* https://github.com/morrissinger/ma-laws
* https://github.com/sethwoodworth/mass-legis-boston-public

For inspiration is this blog post: [https://blog.abevoelker.com/gitlaw-github-for-laws-and-legal-documents-a-tourniquet-for-american-liberty/|GitLaw: GitHub for Laws and Legal Documents - a Tourniquet for American Liberty]

=== Other Ideas ===

We could use some kind of listing of current endeavors and maybe specific things that need volunteers.  jokeefe agreed to put one up on the wiki.

[12:25] == Shidash1 [~shidash@155.41.nll.oqs] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[12:26] <jokeefe> Guess the fliers for PAX/LibrePlanet should say it is in June in Metro Boston, then?
[12:26] <srevilak> "June in Boston" sounds okay to me
[12:28] <jokeefe> ok, So 3.2 Topics & Speakers
[12:28] <jokeefe> Suggestions?  Some ideas from the last General Meeting at http://www.masspirates.org/wiki/index.php?title=March_10th,_2013_General_Meeting
[12:31] <js0000> i've been installing opensource firmware on my internet router
[12:32] <js0000> i could do something on that, but is it really related to the pirate party at all ... ?
[12:32] <js0000> i don't think so
[12:32] <@SplendidSpoon> I gotta run interviewing candidate
[12:32] == Shidash [~shidash@963-14-29-483-xwaiapv4k.bu.edu] has joined #masspirates

[12:32] == mode/#masspirates [+l 27] by [4Q]
[12:33] <jokeefe> vaguely, js0000
[12:33] <jokeefe> anyone willing to help setup our wifi for the conference?
[12:34] <js0000> that's a segue if i ever heard one ... haha
[12:34] <js0000> ok, i can help
[12:34] <jokeefe> thank you.  others?
[12:36] <srevilak> I can bring a WAP if we need a second one
[12:38] <jokeefe> thanks.  will ask for more folks to help as well.
[12:38] <jokeefe> Moving on
[12:39] <jokeefe> Legislation Review of An Act updating privacy protections for personal electronic information - http://www.malegislature.gov/Bills/188/Senate/S796
[12:39] <aurelien> there is also http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/index.shtml
[12:40] <aurelien> and the CNR write by the french resistance during the second war
[12:40] <aurelien> saying simply that all personnal communication are private.
[12:41] <aurelien> it's in french ... http://fscorsica.org/DemocracyNow/CNR.pdf
[12:41] <jokeefe> nice and simple
[12:42] <aurelien> Jean Moulin have been tortured and killed by the nazi after that.
[12:42] <srevilak> I've started reading S796.  It's a bit tricky, lots of "in section X, strike Y, and insert the following".  Not quite so nice and simple
[12:42] <jokeefe> yes
[12:42] <js0000> yeah- i took a look too and found it confusing
[12:42] <srevilak> diff is SO much more efficient
[12:43] <jokeefe> not so much for adds, though
[12:43] <jokeefe> I like incontext diffs for these types of things.
[12:43] <jokeefe> since we don't know the existing language well.
[12:44] <jokeefe> we don't have to decide now.
[12:44] <srevilak> I may go through the exercise of taking exiting law, applying the changes, and seeing what it says
[12:45] <srevilak> If I have bandwidth over the next few days
[12:45] <jokeefe> sensible.
[12:45] <jokeefe> strikes me that the policy committee should review these. anyone want to join it?
[12:45] <jokeefe> take existing laws, mark it up, write meta commentary.
[12:47] <jokeefe> or check in law, make edits, show diff, write meta commentary
[12:48] <jokeefe> keep meaning to get a https://github.com/ account
[12:49] <jokeefe> srevilak, any idea if we could have a git server at mayfirst?
[12:50] <jokeefe> of course github is free as long as it is public
[12:50] <srevilak> jokeefe: I don't see why not
[12:51] <srevilak> even if it's only git over ssh, that's just a matter of making a repository and setting up ssh keys
[12:51] <js0000> git is distributed anyway
[12:51] <srevilak> but gitosis could be fun to play with :)
[12:51] <jokeefe> there is this: https://github.com/morrissinger/ma-laws
[12:51] <js0000> gitosis?
[12:51] <jokeefe> gitosis? i like it just from the name
[12:51]  * js0000 thinks it sounds like a social disease
[12:52] <srevilak> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gitosis
[12:52] <jokeefe> this looks interesting as well https://github.com/sethwoodworth/mass-legis-boston-public
[12:54] <jokeefe> I think we have a talk.  Using git to keep track of changes in legislation.
[12:54] <srevilak> http://www.generalwill.org/, but that's more focused on annotation
[12:55] <srevilak> https://blog.abevoelker.com/gitlaw-github-for-laws-and-legal-documents-a-tourniquet-for-american-liberty/
[12:55]  * js0000 has to run to a meeting
[12:55] <jokeefe> take care js0000
[12:56] == js0000 [~jsaylor@makqkv-95.feldberg.brandeis.edu] has left #masspirates [c u l8r!]
[12:56] <jokeefe> I remember generalwill.org, does it do diffs?
[12:56] == mode/#masspirates [+l 25] by [4Q]
[12:56] <srevilak> I'm not sure.  Been a while since I've played with it
[12:56] <srevilak> But the annotation, suggested changes facilities were kind of neat
[12:57] <jokeefe> true
[12:57] == OurAnonTimes [webchat@fv10-718-715-67.ks.ks.cox.net] has quit [Quit: Web client closed]
[12:59] <jokeefe> well, looks like we need to experiment.
[12:59] <jokeefe> that is all I have.  anything folks want to bring up?
[13:02] <+steverudy> I think it'd be good to get some kind of listing of current endeavors and maybe specific things that need volunteers, etc
[13:02] <jokeefe> very good idea.  I keep meaning to put a todo list up on the wiki.  thanks for the kick in the pants
[13:03] <+steverudy> :)
[13:08] <jokeefe> if you don't see it in a few days, please ping me on twitter a jpokeefe
[13:09] <+steverudy> can do
[13:13] <jokeefe> thanks!

Committee Reports

Democracy/IT

  • as of last night, our wiki should be spam-free, or pretty darn close to spam free
  • mayfirst (hosting provider we're moving too) has a nice canned mediawiki setup, but it's a slightly older version
  • plan is to export remaining pages (about 135 of them), and import into a new mediawiki instance
  • hopefully we can use mysqldump to migrate users accounts, but that needs to be tested
  • we do wiki migration when Democracy committee next meets
  • set up new masspirates web site last sat, and working on mailing list migration
  • new blog at masspiratesweb.mayfirst.org
  • 3dclay sent new image design, sent him comments, waiting on final version
  • need more stock images, since this new theme is more image intensive

Welcoming

  • posted a request for interns
  • found a site for an evening meetup

Conference

Space

Haven't heard back from all places yet. Will put out a flier with date and location vague.

Topics & Speakers

A talk on using whatever GitLaw like platform we adopt would be good.

Logistics

js0000 said he would help with the conference wifi.

Legislation

Started a review of An Act updating privacy protections for personal electronic information, but since it consisted only of the changes and not what is being changed, it proved to be more difficult to tackle it in a half an hour.

Discussion ensued about what tools we could use to track such diffs. They included:

  • Setting up a [1] account since they are free for public items.
  • Setting up a git server on our new hosting service
  • Using [2]
  • Using Will, which was done by some Occupy Boston folks

Some tools we found:

For inspiration is this blog post: GitHub for Laws and Legal Documents - a Tourniquet for American Liberty

Other Ideas

We could use some kind of listing of current endeavors and maybe specific things that need volunteers. jokeefe agreed to put one up on the wiki.

[12:38] <jokeefe> Moving on [12:39] <jokeefe> Legislation Review of An Act updating privacy protections for personal electronic information - http://www.malegislature.gov/Bills/188/Senate/S796 [12:39] <aurelien> there is also http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/index.shtml [12:40] <aurelien> and the CNR write by the french resistance during the second war [12:40] <aurelien> saying simply that all personnal communication are private. [12:41] <aurelien> it's in french ... http://fscorsica.org/DemocracyNow/CNR.pdf [12:41] <jokeefe> nice and simple [12:42] <aurelien> Jean Moulin have been tortured and killed by the nazi after that. [12:42] <srevilak> I've started reading S796. It's a bit tricky, lots of "in section X, strike Y, and insert the following". Not quite so nice and simple [12:42] <jokeefe> yes [12:42] <js0000> yeah- i took a look too and found it confusing [12:42] <srevilak> diff is SO much more efficient [12:43] <jokeefe> not so much for adds, though [12:43] <jokeefe> I like incontext diffs for these types of things. [12:43] <jokeefe> since we don't know the existing language well. [12:44] <jokeefe> we don't have to decide now. [12:44] <srevilak> I may go through the exercise of taking exiting law, applying the changes, and seeing what it says [12:45] <srevilak> If I have bandwidth over the next few days [12:45] <jokeefe> sensible. [12:45] <jokeefe> strikes me that the policy committee should review these. anyone want to join it? [12:45] <jokeefe> take existing laws, mark it up, write meta commentary. [12:47] <jokeefe> or check in law, make edits, show diff, write meta commentary [12:48] <jokeefe> keep meaning to get a https://github.com/ account [12:49] <jokeefe> srevilak, any idea if we could have a git server at mayfirst? [12:50] <jokeefe> of course github is free as long as it is public [12:50] <srevilak> jokeefe: I don't see why not [12:51] <srevilak> even if it's only git over ssh, that's just a matter of making a repository and setting up ssh keys [12:51] <js0000> git is distributed anyway [12:51] <srevilak> but gitosis could be fun to play with :) [12:51] <jokeefe> there is this: https://github.com/morrissinger/ma-laws [12:51] <js0000> gitosis? [12:51] <jokeefe> gitosis? i like it just from the name [12:51] * js0000 thinks it sounds like a social disease [12:52] <srevilak> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gitosis [12:52] <jokeefe> this looks interesting as well https://github.com/sethwoodworth/mass-legis-boston-public [12:54] <jokeefe> I think we have a talk. Using git to keep track of changes in legislation. [12:54] <srevilak> http://www.generalwill.org/, but that's more focused on annotation [12:55] <srevilak> https://blog.abevoelker.com/gitlaw-github-for-laws-and-legal-documents-a-tourniquet-for-american-liberty/ [12:55] * js0000 has to run to a meeting [12:55] <jokeefe> take care js0000 [12:56] == js0000 [~jsaylor@makqkv-95.feldberg.brandeis.edu] has left #masspirates [c u l8r!] [12:56] <jokeefe> I remember generalwill.org, does it do diffs?
