[9:03pm] jokeefe: Anything to add?
[9:03pm] jokeefe: I added the Oppose the Protect and Serve Act of 2018?
[9:04pm] hvxgr_: How about a quick explanation/comparison of civi crm vs nationbuilder (I'm sorta being forced to learn nationbuilder).
[9:05pm] jokeefe: ok | |||
[9:05pm] jokeefe: CiviCRM is libre software that you own and deploy on a server you control
[9:06pm] jokeefe: all the data is under your control
[9:06pm] jokeefe: nationbuilder is offered by a third party. You pay for the service. Less maintenance, but they get to use your data.
[9:06pm] jokeefe: features are similar.
[9:07pm] jokeefe: is that enough of an explantion?
[9:07pm] hvxgr_: Does it support the "mail blast" approach where peoples clicks in response to mass emailings update a people or event datbase?
[9:07pm] jokeefe: Yes | |||
[9:07pm] jokeefe: We use it for our mailing list and events campaigns etc.
[9:08pm] hvxgr_: I suggested civicrm, and would lean that way, but two groups I'm involved with went w/ nb.
[9:08pm] jokeefe: Yeah noticed that Greens tend to do that.
[9:08pm] hvxgr_: That's enough/thx.
[9:08pm] jokeefe: Review - Joe any thoughts on the video
[9:09pm] Pirate_Joe: I have not had time to watch it but I enjoyed making it.
[9:10pm] Pirate_Joe: I am sorry that I had to play devils advocate but that would be easier if we had some guess that did not share our point of view
[9:11pm] Pirate_Joe: having a nice long vid was a nice change since we were able to hit a lot of points though
[9:11pm] jokeefe: Good to have views challenged.
[9:11pm] jokeefe: I like shorter videos myself, but it was fun.
[9:11pm] jokeefe: Decisions/Endorsements
[9:11pm] Pirate_Joe: I have my son until late today but tomorrow I'll have a change to review and send out the challenges
[9:12pm] jokeefe: Thanks.
[9:12pm] jokeefe: The House voted for the Protect and Serve Act of 2018. I believe that everyone in the MA delegation voted for it.
[9:13pm] jokeefe: It would make police a protected class if they are harmed.
[9:13pm] jokeefe: https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/5698
[9:14pm] jokeefe: It looks like another tool prosecutors can use to get people to plea instead of going to trial
[9:14pm] jokeefe: It is pretty short
[9:15pm] jokeefe: only applies to Federal law enforcement officers
[9:15pm] Pirate_Joe: just wait, it will filter down
[9:16pm] jokeefe: DEA, FBI, marshall service, etc.
[9:16pm] jokeefe: no doubt. wouldn’t take a lot of edits to change it to apply more broadly
[9:16pm] jokeefe: though that might make it more subject to challenge, maybe
[9:16pm] Pirate_Joe: thing is that it's a good deal of pointless laws, since attacking anyone is illegal
[9:17pm] Pirate_Joe: like the difference between a yellow light and a red. They actually mean the same thing on the books
[9:17pm] jokeefe: yeah, but it increases the punishment
[9:18pm] jokeefe: thoughts on opposing it?
[9:18pm] Pirate_Joe: we could but
[9:19pm] Pirate_Joe: it's a bit pointless. It's more of a law that is in place so that it looks like congress is doing something, at least that's my take away from it
[9:19pm] Pirate_Joe: quick, look busy, the boss is watching
[9:19pm] Pirate_Joe: crime vs fed agents is pretty low tbh
[9:20pm] jokeefe: I expect it will be used especially by Sessions DOJ
[9:21pm] Pirate_Joe: I'm sure there will be some that exploit it. I am opposed to it though since I am fully against pointless laws
[9:23pm] Pirate_Joe: The point of law is to be a social contract to be upheld by all citizens. If we make it so convoluted that know one understands it then everyone will be breaking it
[9:26pm] jokeefe: sounds like you should write the statement
[9:27pm] Pirate_Joe: lol, I still owe you a statement from an old one we opposed
[9:29pm] jokeefe: Think this is more pressing
[9:29pm] Pirate_Joe: Not sure exactly when I can get to it, but if you want me to do it I will
[9:30pm] jokeefe: Even if it is we oppose because the point of law is to be a social contract to be upheld by all citizens. If we make it so convoluted that know one understands it then everyone will be breaking it. …
[9:30pm] jokeefe: short and sweet
[9:31pm] jokeefe: send to the list and we can edit it and decide next meeting?
[9:31pm] Pirate_Joe: I am against protecting any one group anyways. We ALL should be protected together no matter race, sex, sexual pref, etc
[9:31pm] Pirate_Joe: Mind if I send it to you?
[9:31pm] Pirate_Joe: Let you get in some last minute edits if required?
[9:33pm] jokeefe: ok | |||
[9:34pm] Pirate_Joe: Ok, I should be able to work on it after I get to the video tomorrow night
[9:34pm] jokeefe: ok | |||

[9:35pm] jokeefe: Bunch of statements in progress, plus two Malt wrote that I will get up on the site.
[9:35pm] jokeefe: Video Newsletter - When should we have the next one and what form should it take?
[9:37pm] Pirate_Joe: We should do the next few as small videos, 5 to 10 minutes
[9:37pm] Pirate_Joe: I was thinking of doing a crypto vid next on the basic of internet safety
[9:38pm] Pirate_Joe: Things that all kids should know about protecting themselves online
[9:39pm] jokeefe: sounds good. Could refine my slides from the mos cryptoparty
[9:39pm] jokeefe: but keep it focused on a few topics
[9:39pm] Pirate_Joe: The first one we really should do the basics for kids online.
[9:40pm] Pirate_Joe: Then more advanced stuff like what sites to buy from and which ones you shouldn't. etc.
[9:40pm] jokeefe: will put up a list of things to discuss and email for review

FOSS Tutorials
Worcester farm group is interested in having some FOSS tutorials. Perhaps:
- how to do basic labels in GIMP,
- work through a few sample spreadsheets related to seed cost and
- similarly applicable real-world situations, depending on the needs of the group
Basically how to do graph design & product management with open source tools. Malt will put together a one paragraph description of what we need and we can mail it out to ask pirates to help.
Tech/Outreach
- email Loomio invite to supporters (jokeefe)
- set up torrents for PirateCon videos (creynolds)
- post remaining audio for PirateCon talks (srevilak)
