Summary
Discussed picnic. Nice event. About 20 people came.
Plan to start publishing a quarterly newsletter this fall. For now, goal is to have articles written by September 1st, with the goal of publishing near the end of September. Perhaps half-page zine style.
Minutes
[9:02pm] jokeefe: Agenda - https://masspirates.org/wiki/August_3rd,_2015_IRC_Meeting [9:02pm] jokeefe: ids - James O'Keefe, Somerville [9:03pm] noe: Noelani Kamelamela, Somerville [9:03pm] srevilak: Steve Revilak, Arlington, MA [9:04pm] jokeefe: I think we are reaching the point of peak top level domain registries - you can now get .FORSALE, .SALE, and .MARKET domains [9:04pm] Bluestreak: Lucia Fiero [9:04pm] srevilak: And .horse too. http://taylorswift.horse/ [9:04pm] Bluestreak: LOL [9:05pm] jokeefe: is .putʲɪn next? [9:05pm] Bluestreak: Still laughing [9:05pm] jokeefe: oh my [9:05pm] jokeefe: Reviews [9:06pm] jokeefe: Pirate Picnic - I counted 20 people. Good turn out. [9:06pm] jokeefe: We didn’t grill, but everyone had fun and kept the seagulls at bay. [9:07pm] Bluestreak: Grilling is overrated [9:07pm] jokeefe: There was a Community Church of Boston event not far away [9:07pm] jokeefe: Yes it is [9:07pm] Bluestreak: Oh that’s how you saw Joan? [9:07pm] jokeefe: Still had to lug the charcoal in case [9:07pm] jokeefe: Yes, on the boat. [9:08pm] noe: It was nice to meet Megan, thanks for letting her know, Lucia. [9:08pm] Bluestreak: Go Joan! [9:08pm] Bluestreak: I knew she would like you Noe [9:08pm] jokeefe: We discussed media strategy and may have someone (who I won’t name for privacy issues), who might be willing to help with marketing [9:08pm] Bluestreak: She is very interested in the MPP [9:09pm] Bluestreak: She will prolly help at FR [9:11pm] jokeefe: srevilak posted his notes to the list. [9:12pm] jokeefe: noe, anything you want to add? [9:12pm] Bluestreak: Thanks srevilak, Jason and I appreciated your notes [9:13pm] Kendra joined the chat room. [9:13pm] noe: I couldn't tell if the people near us (not Joe, but the people near the tree) were with us or not? I think they were hanging out together and happened to come. [9:14pm] Kendra: Anyone notice the body camera on the one guy with the Democracy NOw t-shirt? [9:14pm] jokeefe: ahoy Kendra [9:14pm] srevilak: noe: they were with Zak. Ben and I talked to them for a while. [9:15pm] Kendra: Kendra Moyer, East Boston [9:15pm] srevilak: Kendra: missed that [9:15pm] Kendra: I noticed it on the dock and thought he would ask someone for an interview or something [9:16pm] jokeefe: My understanding was the folks at the other table were not with us or Zak [9:16pm] noe: Also, also. I like that Georges Island is a little off the beaten path. Highly recommend it for the picnic next year! [9:16pm] noe: Kendra: interesting. [9:16pm] jokeefe: thanks, Kendra. [9:16pm] srevilak: jokeefe: agreed. Folks at other end of the table were there when we arrived [9:17pm] Bluestreak: So [9:17pm] Bluestreak: Blue? [9:17pm] Bluestreak: Did she make it? [9:17pm] srevilak: Bluestreak: no [9:17pm] Bluestreak: huh [9:18pm] jokeefe: Any other observations on the picnic. Did the media tasks make sense? [9:19pm] Kendra: I think a quarterly newsletter trifold is a good idea and agreed to help spearhead something like that for the fall quarter [9:19pm] Kendra: We can look back and forward at the same time [9:20pm] srevilak: I've added the new signups to civi [9:20pm] jokeefe: thanks! [9:20pm] jokeefe: So, fall news letter - when? [9:21pm] srevilak: How about October? [9:21pm] Bluestreak: To promote Cory [9:21pm] Bluestreak: or to follow up? [9:21pm] srevilak: Or Perhaps Nov. would be more appropriate. 2016 election kickoff [9:21pm] Kendra: Fall offically starts the last week of Septembe, so that sounds about right [9:21pm] Kendra: Maybe a little before that event [9:22pm] jokeefe: If we want it for the Doctorow event, then it needs to be ready by Oct 1st. [9:22pm] Kendra: Either way, I will start putting a template together in InDesign [9:22pm] jokeefe: at least no later [9:23pm] jokeefe: cool [9:23pm] Bluestreak: Thanks [9:24pm] jokeefe: So if Oct 1st availability, then articles in a month before - 1 September? [9:24pm] jokeefe: No reason we cannot have an article about running for office in it [9:25pm] jokeefe: or aim for a November date for availability? [9:25pm] noe: Kendra: you are awesome. [9:26pm] Kendra: We might need to do a Pirate Pad with suggestions for submissions. I get some good ideas from Alex Matthews and Gred Housh's Linked in Posts for example [9:26pm] srevilak: Sep writing, Oct availability sounds good [9:26pm] Bluestreak: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/evan-greer/cisa-the-dirty-deal-betwe_1_b_7883722.html [9:27pm] Kendra: There was a protest at Cambridge City Hall today (taxi drivers vs Uber) I observed and some others coming up, we could also report on stuff like that [9:27pm] jokeefe: Hadn’t seen that one [9:27pm] jokeefe: Sounds good. Who can put up a post calling for submissions? [9:28pm] Bluestreak: What is the [9:28pm] Kendra: I have time tomorrow during the day if I draft something quickly tonight. I need to get my log in credential updated for posting on the website [9:28pm] Bluestreak: Pirate stance on the “sharing economy”? [9:29pm] Bluestreak: If you write it Kendra, I can post it [9:29pm] jokeefe: renting or gig economy seem more apt [9:29pm] srevilak: A 1 sheet/two page publication isn't much. Might want to come up with list of topics, and then figure out who writes them [9:30pm] jokeefe: thanks to your both. figure out a word count for them [9:30pm] jokeefe: please figure out a word count for them [9:30pm] srevilak: Personally, I vote for 1 sheet four-page zine, rather than trifold. Trifold looks more like a brochure [9:31pm] jokeefe: so 11 x 17, folded in half at the 8 1/2 mark? [9:32pm] srevilak: No, 8.5 * 11, folded in half. Zine style [9:32pm] Bluestreak: 4 pages is plenty to start [9:33pm] noe: I think we have a lot to say. I think we can do 4 pages, probably a quarter of one of those pages would be boilerplate/contact info [9:33pm] jokeefe: works for me [9:33pm] noe: (title-date-typical filler) [9:33pm] srevilak: noe: plus the boilerplate plea for contributions [9:35pm] noe: srevilak: yes! we will definitely need more for the next couple. are we assuming quarterly-ness? January would be next issue? submission in December? [9:35pm] jokeefe: Yes [9:35pm] jokeefe: Each should have a call for submissions and the next submission date [9:35pm] jokeefe: newsletter@masspirates? [9:36pm] Kendra: So we could look at a mid August submission deadline for a mid September publication, so some such schedule [9:37pm] jokeefe: so two weeks to write articles this go round? seems tight [9:37pm] Kendra: There are protest to cover, elections stuff, bank shenanigans, legislation, police being all crazy, more surveillance, a lot of stuff, more than will fit once we get rolling. [9:38pm] Kendra: If we do something on the freedom rally, cory doctorow, our general platform, etc and pull from things already posted on the site we might be able to do it. [9:38pm] srevilak: Very exciting! [9:38pm] Bluestreak: I have been too tired to write [9:39pm] Kendra: but i suggest the mid month dates so that something is ready at the start of the month regardless. [9:39pm] srevilak: Bluestreak: I hope you're focusing on getting better! [9:39pm] Bluestreak: I am [9:39pm] noe: Bluestreak: we have new people that we should be trying to get to write, too, so it should be okay. [9:39pm] Bluestreak: Well, get to it! [9:39pm] noe: Bluestreak: it won't be as awesome as your writing, but its good to train newbies. [9:40pm] Kendra: i miss writing and have been too busy and tired, but look forward doing something, there is a Black Lives Matter protest coming up on 8/8 I think [9:40pm] jokeefe: no time like the present [9:40pm] Bluestreak: If you can’t log on, email me, and I will post it for you. [9:40pm] jokeefe: where is the event? got a link? [9:40pm] Kendra: Also, I meant to say Scribus (free software publishing) not In Design [9:40pm] srevilak: Kendra: I was wondering about the in-design bit [9:41pm] jokeefe: ok, if you are comfortable with at mid August submissions date and mid September publication date, I am fine with that. [9:41pm] jokeefe: Moving on [9:41pm] jokeefe: TPP on the rocks? [9:42pm] jokeefe: Apparently the talks didn’t go well [9:42pm] Kendra: Street medics sent me this: It's an event in honor and celebration of Michael Brown. It will be starting at 2pm on August 9th Harvard Sq in Cambridge and ending in a cookout of some sort. [9:42pm] jokeefe: the article I linked to contained the details. they haven’t set a date for the next discussion [9:42pm] noe: I sort of enjoy all of the grandstanding that's going on. <--TPP [9:43pm] jokeefe: happy to publicize it and encourage people to attend it, Kendra. thanks [9:43pm] noe: Kendra: cookout! sounds neat. [9:43pm] Kendra: I think the raising hell about TPP finally caught on [9:43pm] Bluestreak: Can [9:43pm] Bluestreak: derp nvm [9:43pm] • srevilak is still nervous about TPP, as long as TPA remains in effect [9:43pm] Bluestreak: wrong window [9:44pm] jokeefe: This - List of trade traitors in House and Senate is helpful http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/democrats-who-voted-for-fast-track [9:44pm] Bluestreak: E Warren has been speaking out [9:44pm] Bluestreak: B Sanders [9:44pm] Kendra: TPP: It's like toppling over a vending machine, you have to rock it back a forth a few times, and all of its offspring [9:44pm] Bluestreak: Ppl like to listen to the names [9:44pm] jokeefe: Few in New England [9:45pm] jokeefe: Agreed, srevilak. Even if TPP fails, there is still TTIP & TiSA [9:45pm] jokeefe: Few trade traitors in New England [9:45pm] jokeefe: that is [9:46pm] Bluestreak: Trade traitors! [9:47pm] Kendra: I see a headline [9:47pm] jokeefe: CISA - Heard not a vote yet, but in a few weeks possibly - https://www.opencongress.org/bill/s2588-113/show [9:48pm] jokeefe: http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/technology/250070-is-cisa-gift-wrapped-for-hackers-and-nation-state-actors [9:49pm] jokeefe: Also - https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/senate-bill/754/actions [9:50pm] jokeefe: Working on a blog post for it. More of Mass. legislators are on the fence [9:51pm] jokeefe: I updated the Freedom Rally post in a minor way (https://piratenpad.de/p/p8YhioqeNosh) who is posting it? [9:52pm] Bluestreak: You can! [9:53pm] Bluestreak: [9:53pm] jokeefe: Thanks. Trying to decentralize. [9:53pm] Bluestreak: lol [9:53pm] Bluestreak: I’ll give it a stab [9:53pm] Bluestreak: tomorrow [9:53pm] jokeefe: Thank you. [9:54pm] jokeefe: Other August Event? [9:54pm] Kendra: My birthday, 45 on August 28 [9:55pm] Kendra: Feeling old [9:55pm] jokeefe: congratulations! [9:55pm] Bluestreak: Please [9:55pm] Bluestreak: 49 [9:55pm] jokeefe: srevilak, do we need another MAAPL hackathon? [9:55pm] Kendra: thanks, better right? [9:55pm] Bluestreak: lol [9:56pm] srevilak: jokeefe: may not [9:56pm] jokeefe: is fine. [9:56pm] srevilak: From discussions on MAAPL list, we're going to try to salvage work from last hackaton [9:56pm] srevilak: with a little API hacking from yours truly [9:56pm] jokeefe: ok [9:57pm] jokeefe: busy man [9:57pm] Bluestreak: Calling [9:57pm] Bluestreak: Call people [9:57pm] Bluestreak: Gimme a script [9:57pm] Kendra: I think it is good to stay engaged with their efforts. I was going to also approach some of the real black Lives Matter people about a smallish crypto-party, I am cool with one of the insiders there [9:57pm] Kendra: They need it [9:57pm] jokeefe: thank you [9:57pm] jokeefe: happy to bring it to them [9:57pm] jokeefe: thinking August? [9:58pm] Bluestreak: There is the BLM on the 9th [9:58pm] jokeefe: or September? [9:58pm] Bluestreak: we could endorse/support [9:58pm] Bluestreak: the cookout thingy [9:58pm] Kendra: i have the number of one of the leaders and Adia was teaching at SETC in conjunction with us, so she will vouch for us, but it is a matter of scheduling and I still do not have a phone, though that should change this week [10:00pm] jokeefe: endorsing is good, but appearing is better [10:00pm] Kendra: I will be at that one. [10:00pm] Bluestreak: I have surgery on the 10th [10:00pm] Bluestreak: minor [10:00pm] Bluestreak: gonna rest on the 9th [10:00pm] jokeefe: I have a family event unfortunately. [10:00pm] jokeefe: anyone else? [10:01pm] jokeefe: don’t think your surgery is minor, Bluestreak [10:01pm] noe: I will see what my schedule is like, but I think I can make it for the beginning part on the 9th. [10:01pm] Bluestreak: It is though [10:01pm] srevilak: Should be able to make it on 9th [10:01pm] Bluestreak: Send good juju [10:01pm] jokeefe: thank Kendra & noe [10:01pm] Bluestreak: Yes! Thanks [10:02pm] Bluestreak: Michael Brown on Al Jazeera right now [10:02pm] jokeefe: Kendra please send what details you have so we can get the word out about it at least. [10:02pm] Bluestreak: social media it [10:02pm] jokeefe: we are at time [10:03pm] Bluestreak: move to adjourn [10:03pm] jokeefe: but I don’t want to stop the discussion if there is more to say [10:03pm] Bluestreak: lol [10:03pm] noe: second [10:03pm] Bluestreak: Im beat [10:03pm] jokeefe: no doubt [10:03pm] Bluestreak: but go on w/o me [10:03pm] Bluestreak: ! [10:03pm] srevilak: 2nd move to adjourn [10:03pm] Bluestreak: Nighty night! [10:03pm] jokeefe: all in favor? [10:03pm] Bluestreak: aye [10:03pm] Kendra: aye [10:03pm] Bluestreak left the chat room. [10:03pm] jokeefe: aye [10:03pm] srevilak: aye [10:04pm] srevilak: will post notes [10:04pm] Kendra: nite [10:04pm] Kendra left the chat room.
