=== Senate Race Redux ===
We talked about it and decided that our Articles of Agreement prevent us from helping with Vermin Supreme's campaign, but that should he run as a Pirate, we can mention that he is a Pirate who is running for the Senate. Our response will be to thank him for thinking of running as a Pirate, but our party constitution prevent us from running or helping candidates for state-wide office. He is welcome to run as a Pirate and we will mention that he is running as a Pirate though we cannot nominate him. We are certainly interested in working Vermin on projects that deal with our shared issues.

From kusanagi of NY: | |||
* The PNC met last night. PPOK was removed from probationary status to observer;
* USPP needs to revise the PNC Constitution as there were many errors. May have a meeting to fix them either Sunday or Monday over IRC;
* NY looking to run a candidate for state legislature.

[12:35] <@Shidash> https://www.facebook.com/events/277161625745533/ somewhat, people were posting pictures and videos there
[12:36] <@jokeefe> thanks
[12:36] <@jokeefe> So, Senate Race Redux
[12:37] <@mildbeard> aah yes
[12:38] <@[bsod]> lemme guess, a bunch of loosers are running?
[12:38] <@jokeefe> a lot of discussion on Vermin Supreme's suggestion that he be our (write-in) Senate candidate. Our articles of agreement prevent the Party from helping his campaign or nominating him, though would he be a candidate, we would have to help as best we can.
[12:38] <@mildbeard> If someone stood as a presidential candidate, would our articles of incorporation prevent us from supporting them too?
[12:39] <@jokeefe> yes
[12:39] <@jokeefe> or at least nominating them.
[12:39] <@mildbeard> What does it take for an amendment?
[12:39] <@[bsod]> whats our articles of agreement
[12:39] <@jokeefe> I would recommend against amending it
[12:40] <@mildbeard> I'm not against our local focus, just suggesting that this provision ties our hands unnecessarily.
[12:40] <@jokeefe> http://masspirates.org/wiki/index.php?title=Articles_of_Agreement
[12:41] <@jokeefe> my experience is that if we don't have that then we won't have a local focus. just look at the Greens & Libertarians in mass.
[12:41] <@[bsod]> which part of that prevents nominating other party peoples
[12:41] <@mildbeard> OK so a 2/3 vote at a members meeting (monthly?) is required for an amendment.
[12:41] <@jokeefe> http://masspirates.org/wiki/index.php?title=Articles_of_Agreement#Article_8.0_-_Candidate_Selection
[12:41] <@[bsod]> hehe, eriks gonna move ahead for the amandments anyways lol
[12:42] <@[bsod]> the first rule might be aplicable and probably a good idea
[12:42] <@mildbeard> Here's the provision, Article 8.0 Candidate Selection
[12:43] <@mildbeard> The Pirate Party shall... not nominate, endorse, or support candidates for state-wide office until the Party gains permanent ballot status (i.e. has registered in the Party 1% of all Massachusetts voters).
[12:44] <@jokeefe> My suggestion is that the party not take a position on the Senate race, but if individual members want to help with his campaign, we cannot stop them.
[12:44] <@mildbeard> Under that provision, I think we'd have to say no to Vermin Supreme and we'd have to avoid mentioning him on our site as a candidate.
[12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> I like Vermin, but I also don't want PP to become a joke
[12:45] <@[bsod]> he seems kinna cooky
[12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> I met him in person at HOPE, chatted a bit

[12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> he's a good guy, smary
[12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> smart*
[12:45] == mode/#masspirates [+l 22] by [4Q]
[12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> and if we were really good, we could find a way to make it work
[12:45] <@[bsod]> oh, massachusetts voters will NEVER elect a smart guy
[12:45] <@jokeefe> however, it also says "shall mention on any electronic media and materials the Party maintains any party member who is a candidate provided that the candidate notifies the 1st Officer in writing"
[12:46] <@jokeefe> so I believe we can mention him at least.
[12:46] <@SplendidSpoon> yes
[12:46] <@mildbeard> Right, but my idea that we'd use IRV to determine a write in candidate is unconstitutional.
[12:46] <@mildbeard> We also can't gather signatures.
[12:46] <@jokeefe> that is the fundamental point
[12:46] <@SplendidSpoon> The Two Hotheads can to do
[12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> can do that*
[12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> I think they have before
[12:47] <@jokeefe> 10,000 signatures is a lot to get
[12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> Right
[12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> That is a lot
[12:47] <@[bsod]> most candidates hire people to go collect signatures dont they
[12:47] <@mildbeard> Does this mean we should avoid endorsing statewide ballot measures too? Would seem to fall under the same heading.
[12:47] <@jokeefe> depends, bsod, Libs do, Greens generally don't
[12:48] <@jokeefe> no, it only specifies candidates
[12:48] <@[bsod]> isnt that the point?
[12:48] <@[bsod]> lol | |||
[12:48] <@mildbeard> But philosophicall it's the same thing, no?
[12:48] <@mildbeard> philosophically
[12:48] <@jokeefe> yes and no.
[12:48] <@[bsod]> no spell checker on irc
[12:49] <@jokeefe> also, ballot measures are so much more difficult, that that creates an inpediment
[12:49] <@[bsod]> to propose an amendment, we should and think more about it first before making a knee jerk reaction to a sudden road block
[12:49] <@jokeefe> ++ | |||
[12:51] <@mildbeard> I'm perfectly happy if we don't endorse Vermin Supremen. I have always felt that disallowing us from endorsing a candidate is a mistake for a political party. I bring up ballot measures because I want to illustrate the shortcomings of the provision.
[12:51] <@mildbeard> I support the local focus, but this clearly goes too far in my opinion.
[12:51] <@[bsod]> 1% is a little high of a goal for us isnt it lol
[12:51] <@mildbeard> I can see there won't be support for an amendment, but I still think it's a mistake.
[12:51] <@SplendidSpoon> mildbeard +1
[12:51] <@jokeefe> that is the point
[12:52] <@jokeefe> 1% would be 40,000 people, if we had that support then we have the people to run a state-wide campaign.
[12:52] <@jokeefe> without detracting from the lower level campaigns
[12:53] <@[bsod]> im not sure if i feel either way about the provision inparticularly until i understand more about what it affects and it's purpose
[12:53] <@[bsod]> is that one effects
[12:53] <@[bsod]> so like, if we really wanna change it, im not saying im against it, just needs a bigger debate
[12:53] <@jokeefe> debate is good
[12:54] <@jokeefe> so with the AoA in mind, what shall we tell Vermin?
[12:54] <@mildbeard> We have to tell him absolutely no.
[12:55] <@jokeefe> let me phrase it this way: is there anyone who wants to work on his campaign over the other things we have scheduled?
[12:56] <@SplendidSpoon> Not particularly, but not because of the Articles
[12:56] <@SplendidSpoon> Just because I don't want our Party to become a joke when we do lots of real, non-satirical work.
[12:56] <@[bsod]> so would this be satire?
[12:57] <@SplendidSpoon> I mean, that's what he usually does, I assume that was the plan this time.
[12:57] <@jokeefe> you should make up your own mind, bsod - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermin_Supreme
[12:58] <@[bsod]> hehe, i saw that, but i thought you guys were serious
[12:58] <@[bsod]> lol | |||
[12:58] <@[bsod]> i dont know enough about what he actually supports
[12:58] <@jokeefe> he has some similar ideas to us: the million meme march is a good one.
[12:58] <@SplendidSpoon> He actually does support our issues, from what I gathered
[12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> Million Meme March IS a good idea, I talked about it with him at hope, among other Pirate stuff
[12:59] <@jokeefe> many of them. I think we are less anarchist than he is.
[12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> Right
[12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> and we also are not promising people ponies
[12:59] <@jokeefe> lol
[12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> and other goofy shit
[13:00] <@[bsod]> why arent we
[13:00] <@[bsod]> dammit
[13:00] <@[bsod]> not seriously
[13:00] <@jokeefe> not enough ponies, though I guess they could be virtual
[13:00] <@[bsod]> i do the satire thing alot and its hard to come back and be serious after that
[13:01] <@jokeefe> actually the virtual ponies bit is an easy pledge to keep.
[13:01] <+kusanagi> pony.txt
[13:01] <@jokeefe> pony.gif
[13:02] <@jokeefe> since I think jpeg is a locked format, IIRC.
[13:02] <@jokeefe> maybe it is the otherway around.
[13:02] <@[bsod]> is it lol
[13:02] <@srevilak> I friend of mine used to run security workshops. Exercise: make attackee's workstation print out pictures of my little ponies.
[13:04] <@jokeefe> pony spma
[13:04] <@jokeefe> spam
[13:04] <@[bsod]> i was thinking about actually mailing cans of spam to people
[13:04] <@[bsod]> the real post office's mail doesnt have a spam filter
[13:04] <@jokeefe> they subsidize it
[13:05] <@[bsod]> and most of our food
[13:05] <@[bsod]> just the cheap stuff though
[13:05] <@[bsod]> and tobacco
[13:06] <@jokeefe> so to summarize: 1) Thanks for thinking of us 2) Our Articles of Agreement prevents us from officially helping with your campaign / nominating / endorsing you 3) But you can still run as a Pirate if you want 4) we would be interested in working with you on our common issues
[13:06] <@jokeefe> does that sound right?
[13:06] <@[bsod]> make it sound warmer
[13:06] <@[bsod]> hehe
[13:06] <@jokeefe> agreed
[13:07] <@[bsod]> so, erik?
[13:08] <@srevilak> jokeefe: I think that's the gist of mailing list discussions
[13:09] <@mildbeard> I think it's fine.
[13:10] <@jokeefe> thinking about the 1% rule, I would be fine with changing it to we can do it if we have people running for half the legislature.
[13:11] <@jokeefe> I just don't want us to go the way of the Libs/Greens and mostly/only focus on state-wide races.
[13:11] <@[bsod]> what if it said, unless 90% or some certain threshold of party members consent
[13:11] <@jokeefe> BTW: there is a bill to reduce the party threshold to 1/2 % rather than 1% and halve the number of sigs required to get on.
[13:12] <@mildbeard> half the legislature might be even harder to meet
[13:12] <@[bsod]> 20,000 seems more realistic of ever happening
[13:12] <@[bsod]> ofc, the state population increases significantly every year
[13:12] <@jokeefe> you think we cannot get 100 candidates from 20,000 members?
[13:14] <@[bsod]> does the quality of candidates matter?
[13:15] <@mildbeard> I guess it doesn't matter, sets the bar very high either way. Either way is equivalent, pretty much. Population or candidates, take your pick.
[13:16] <@[bsod]> im not sure if the libs or greens are doing poorly here because of any paticular thing they did wrong
[13:17] <@jokeefe> i would be happy to talk about that at another time.
[13:17] <@[bsod]> indeed
[13:17] <@jokeefe> so lets table the 1% threshold and see if we can come up with a better solution. I always like better solutions.
[13:18] <@jokeefe> sound ok?
[13:18] <@mildbeard> yup
[13:19] <@[bsod]> ah, compromise, carl marx's ways have failed us
[13:21] <@jokeefe> ya | |||
[13:21] <@jokeefe> mildbeard / kusanagi do either of you have a national report?
[13:22] <+kusanagi> The PNC meeting was last night. PPOK was removed from probationary status to observer
[13:22] <+kusanagi> We need to revise the PNC Constitution as there were many errors.
[13:23] <+kusanagi> I was thinking of having a meeting to fix them either Sunday or Monday over IRC.
[13:23] <+kusanagi> I'm actually here as a NY rep, with some news and we may need some help.
[13:24] <@[bsod]> i vote not to help them unless they give us $3
[13:24] <+kusanagi> Well, it's good news. We're running a candidate, Jason Sullivan, for a position on the Town Counsel of the Town of Brookhaven, district 3.
[13:25] <@[bsod]> but what can we do with only $3 ?
[13:25] <@jokeefe> cool
[13:26] <+kusanagi> We're going to need to collect signatures to get him on the ballot, as Pirate isn't given an auto spot. Some time in March we'll be doing that, and if anyone can come down to help or give advice, we'd greatly appreciate it.
[13:26] <@jokeefe> we can ask folks to help. I have lots of advice to offer. how many sigs?
[13:27] <+kusanagi> about 1500
[13:27] <@[bsod]> out of staters can sign ?
[13:27] <@mildbeard> Out of staters can help gather signatures.
[13:28] <@[bsod]> o i c | |||
[13:28] <+kusanagi> no, out-of-staters can't sign, but can help gather
[13:28] <@[bsod]> im far too lazy for that
[13:28] <+kusanagi> I can't even sign, you have to live in the district
[13:28] <@[bsod]> that's what i thought
[13:28] <@mildbeard> kusanagi, it might help if there were a specific event or initiative you were organizing, that we could ask our members to go down and help with.
[13:29] <@[bsod]> im just too busy being a 24 hour dad, minus atlest 16 hours
[13:29] <@[bsod]> 8hourdad.com
[13:29] <+kusanagi> It's in planning. I wanted to give a heads-up first.
[13:29] <@jokeefe> my talk is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24jkyLYz5HU
[13:29] <@mildbeard> OK cool thanks.
[13:29] <@mildbeard> On the PNC: Of the proposed revisions to the constitution so far, I am in favor of many of them except the notion that there should not be a separate constituion with a 2/3 requirement and bylaws with a 50% requirement. I basically support the other proposed revisions I've seen besides that one.
[13:29] <@[bsod]> i saw that once jokeefe
[13:30] <@jokeefe> my slides are at http://www.masspirates.us/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/CampaignToWin.pdf
[13:30] <+kusanagi> awesome, thanks
[13:30] <@mildbeard> that's a good talk
[13:30] <@jokeefe> Mass. Greens are holding a campaign training in Worcester 2/23
[13:30] <@[bsod]> almost an hour though, need some free time
[13:31] <@[bsod]> wasnt it the green rainbow now
[13:31] <@jokeefe> I can do a google hangout/skype/mumble call/etc. with campaign staff if you want.
[13:32] <+kusanagi> that would be awesome. we were going to meet on sunday, but blizzard
[13:32] <@jokeefe> yes, it is bsod, just keeping it short.
[13:32] <@[bsod]> ya ok
[13:32] <@jokeefe> snow!
[13:32] <@jokeefe> finally!
[13:32] <@[bsod]> tpb-afk comes out tomorrow just in time for the storm
[13:32] <@[bsod]> if you get stuck at home
[13:32] <+kusanagi> So I plan on going to play in the snow and have the meeting with Jason and Zac next Sunday
[13:33] <@mildbeard> One problem we had here was that they had gerrymandered our candidate's district. Many signers thought they were in the district, but it had changed. So a lot of signatures got invalidated and he couldn't make it on the ballot.
[13:33] <@[bsod]> i thought you were coming to the bar near my house?
[13:33] <@mildbeard> Going door to door was proposed as an antidote. You know their address and you can tell if it's in the district.
[13:34] <@[bsod]> hehe, can we do overnight door to door, people would love that
[13:35] <+kusanagi> bsod, LOL
[13:36] <+kusanagi> we're planning on door-to-door, and we have a copy of the district's areas, so we should be okay with that
[13:36] <@jokeefe> right, mildbeard, door-to-door with the voter list is a great way to do it and it gets people thinking about the candidate.
[13:37] <@jokeefe> having the voter list is best. don't want to show up at a place where the people there are not voters.
[13:37] <@jokeefe> at least for the signature drive.
[13:37] <+kusanagi> some events are in embryonic stages of planning
[13:37] <@jokeefe> how long do you have?
[13:37] <+kusanagi> till July I believe
[13:37] <@jokeefe> to gather sigs?
[13:37] <+kusanagi> yes
[13:37] <@mildbeard> wait, how many do you need?
[13:38] <+kusanagi> 1500
[13:39] <@jokeefe> when can you start?
[13:39] <@jokeefe> and who can sign?
[13:39] <@mildbeard> should be doable. I'll try to make it down to help -- that's such a wide timeframe.
[13:39] <@jokeefe> any voter or a subset?
[13:39] <+kusanagi> any voter
[13:39] <+kusanagi> in that district
[13:39] <@jokeefe> good
[13:39] <@jokeefe> right
[13:40] <@[bsod]> hmm, ok... guys; cya next week, sorry I didn't help with anything! (again)
[13:40] <+kusanagi> honestly, we can start right away, but we need to plan a few things first
[13:41] <@jokeefe> take care bsod, please fill out the poll for the next meeting
[13:41] <@jokeefe> who validates the sigs?
[13:42] <+kusanagi> after being signed by a witness, i believe the local board of elections
[13:43] <@jokeefe> great. don't wait until the end to get them to them. the biggest problem is to think you have enough raw sigs, as mildbeard said, then turn them in and not have enough.
[13:44] <@jokeefe> also plan to get way more valid sigs than you need so you have enough if they challenge you.
[13:44] <+kusanagi> yeah, we're going to hopefully begin at the end of the month/early march
[13:45] <@jokeefe> good
[13:45] <@jokeefe> so I think we are off of the official meeting, motion to adjourn?
[13:46] <@mildbeard> Are you asking for a motion, or asking us to second yours :P
[13:47] == Shidash [~shidash@647-46-00-319-lturxotb8w.bu.edu] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[13:47] <@jokeefe> 2nd
[13:47] <@mildbeard> I either move to adjourn the meeting, or I second jokeefe's motion.
[13:47] <@mildbeard> aah, the latter
[13:48] <@jokeefe> I'll be clearer next time.
[13:48] <@jokeefe> All in favor?
[13:48] <@jokeefe> aye
[13:48] <@mildbeard> aye

Summary
Planning for International Day for Privacy #IDP13 Cryptoparty
Set for Sat., Feb 23rd, 3-5pm at E5. We have the space from 2-6pm.
Talks (in no particular order) will be:
- TOR Demo (srevilak)
- I2P Demo (mildbeard)
- Discussion of risk assessment (aka - why this stuff matters)
- Maybe talk on encrypting your files/disk
Space cost is about $40 for four hours. We can ask donations.
Senate Race Redux
We talked about it and decided that our Articles of Agreement prevent us from helping with Vermin Supreme's campaign, but that should he run as a Pirate, we can mention that he is a Pirate who is running for the Senate. Our response will be to thank him for thinking of running as a Pirate, but our party constitution prevent us from running or helping candidates for state-wide office. He is welcome to run as a Pirate and we will mention that he is running as a Pirate though we cannot nominate him. We are certainly interested in working Vermin on projects that deal with our shared issues.
National Party update
From kusanagi of NY:
- The PNC met last night. PPOK was removed from probationary status to observer;
- USPP needs to revise the PNC Constitution as there were many errors. May have a meeting to fix them either Sunday or Monday over IRC;
- NY looking to run a candidate for state legislature.

[12:22] <@jokeefe> So: Planning for International Day for Privacy #IDP13 Cryptoparty [12:22] <@jokeefe> we need a flier. [12:23] <@jokeefe> srevilak suggested someone, that I will follow up with. [12:32] <@jokeefe> thank you [12:32] <@Shidash> jokeefe: As far as I know, there isn't a link to the results? [12:32] <@mildbeard> yvw [12:32] <@[bsod]> still cant wait for vacation, was hoping the tax refund would be back by then [12:32] <@jokeefe> ok, thanks, Shidash [12:33] <@Shidash> We tried to document it but I don't think that worked? [12:33] <@jokeefe> is there a central place for videos/pics? [12:35] <@Shidash> https://www.facebook.com/events/277161625745533/ somewhat, people were posting pictures and videos there [12:36] <@jokeefe> thanks [12:36] <@jokeefe> So, Senate Race Redux [12:37] <@mildbeard> aah yes [12:38] <@[bsod]> lemme guess, a bunch of loosers are running? [12:38] <@jokeefe> a lot of discussion on Vermin Supreme's suggestion that he be our (write-in) Senate candidate. Our articles of agreement prevent the Party from helping his campaign or nominating him, though would he be a candidate, we would have to help as best we can. [12:38] <@mildbeard> If someone stood as a presidential candidate, would our articles of incorporation prevent us from supporting them too? [12:39] <@jokeefe> yes [12:39] <@jokeefe> or at least nominating them. [12:39] <@mildbeard> What does it take for an amendment? [12:39] <@[bsod]> whats our articles of agreement [12:39] <@jokeefe> I would recommend against amending it [12:40] <@mildbeard> I'm not against our local focus, just suggesting that this provision ties our hands unnecessarily. [12:40] <@jokeefe> http://masspirates.org/wiki/index.php?title=Articles_of_Agreement [12:41] <@jokeefe> my experience is that if we don't have that then we won't have a local focus. just look at the Greens & Libertarians in mass. [12:41] <@[bsod]> which part of that prevents nominating other party peoples [12:41] <@mildbeard> OK so a 2/3 vote at a members meeting (monthly?) is required for an amendment. [12:41] <@jokeefe> http://masspirates.org/wiki/index.php?title=Articles_of_Agreement#Article_8.0_-_Candidate_Selection [12:41] <@[bsod]> hehe, eriks gonna move ahead for the amandments anyways lol [12:42] <@[bsod]> the first rule might be aplicable and probably a good idea [12:42] <@mildbeard> Here's the provision, Article 8.0 Candidate Selection [12:43] <@mildbeard> The Pirate Party shall... not nominate, endorse, or support candidates for state-wide office until the Party gains permanent ballot status (i.e. has registered in the Party 1% of all Massachusetts voters). [12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> I like Vermin, but I also don't want PP to become a joke [12:45] <@[bsod]> he seems kinna cooky [12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> I met him in person at HOPE, chatted a bit [12:45] == zby_home [~quassel@12-53-526-980.dynamic.chello.pl] has joined #masspirates [12:45] == mode/#masspirates [+v zby_home] by [4Q] [12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> he's a good guy, smary [12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> smart* [12:45] == mode/#masspirates [+l 22] by [4Q] [12:45] <@SplendidSpoon> and if we were really good, we could find a way to make it work [12:45] <@[bsod]> oh, massachusetts voters will NEVER elect a smart guy [12:45] <@jokeefe> however, it also says "shall mention on any electronic media and materials the Party maintains any party member who is a candidate provided that the candidate notifies the 1st Officer in writing" [12:46] <@jokeefe> so I believe we can mention him at least. [12:46] <@SplendidSpoon> yes [12:46] <@mildbeard> Right, but my idea that we'd use IRV to determine a write in candidate is unconstitutional. [12:46] <@mildbeard> We also can't gather signatures. [12:46] <@jokeefe> that is the fundamental point [12:46] <@SplendidSpoon> The Two Hotheads can to do [12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> can do that* [12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> I think they have before [12:47] <@jokeefe> 10,000 signatures is a lot to get [12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> Right [12:47] <@SplendidSpoon> That is a lot [12:47] <@[bsod]> most candidates hire people to go collect signatures dont they [12:47] <@mildbeard> Does this mean we should avoid endorsing statewide ballot measures too? Would seem to fall under the same heading. [12:47] <@jokeefe> depends, bsod, Libs do, Greens generally don't [12:48] <@jokeefe> no, it only specifies candidates [12:48] <@[bsod]> isnt that the point? [12:48] <@[bsod]> lol [12:48] <@mildbeard> But philosophicall it's the same thing, no? [12:48] <@mildbeard> philosophically [12:48] <@jokeefe> yes and no. [12:48] <@[bsod]> no spell checker on irc [12:49] <@jokeefe> also, ballot measures are so much more difficult, that that creates an inpediment [12:49] <@[bsod]> to propose an amendment, we should and think more about it first before making a knee jerk reaction to a sudden road block [12:49] <@jokeefe> ++ [12:51] <@mildbeard> I'm perfectly happy if we don't endorse Vermin Supremen. I have always felt that disallowing us from endorsing a candidate is a mistake for a political party. I bring up ballot measures because I want to illustrate the shortcomings of the provision. [12:51] <@mildbeard> I support the local focus, but this clearly goes too far in my opinion. [12:51] <@[bsod]> 1% is a little high of a goal for us isnt it lol [12:51] <@mildbeard> I can see there won't be support for an amendment, but I still think it's a mistake. [12:51] <@SplendidSpoon> mildbeard +1 [12:51] <@jokeefe> that is the point [12:52] <@jokeefe> 1% would be 40,000 people, if we had that support then we have the people to run a state-wide campaign. [12:52] <@jokeefe> without detracting from the lower level campaigns [12:53] <@[bsod]> im not sure if i feel either way about the provision inparticularly until i understand more about what it affects and it's purpose [12:53] <@[bsod]> is that one effects [12:53] <@[bsod]> so like, if we really wanna change it, im not saying im against it, just needs a bigger debate [12:53] <@jokeefe> debate is good [12:54] <@jokeefe> so with the AoA in mind, what shall we tell Vermin? [12:54] <@mildbeard> We have to tell him absolutely no. [12:55] <@jokeefe> let me phrase it this way: is there anyone who wants to work on his campaign over the other things we have scheduled? [12:56] <@SplendidSpoon> Not particularly, but not because of the Articles [12:56] <@SplendidSpoon> Just because I don't want our Party to become a joke when we do lots of real, non-satirical work. [12:56] <@[bsod]> so would this be satire? [12:57] <@SplendidSpoon> I mean, that's what he usually does, I assume that was the plan this time. [12:57] <@jokeefe> you should make up your own mind, bsod - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermin_Supreme [12:58] <@[bsod]> hehe, i saw that, but i thought you guys were serious [12:58] <@[bsod]> lol [12:58] <@[bsod]> i dont know enough about what he actually supports [12:58] <@jokeefe> he has some similar ideas to us: the million meme march is a good one. [12:58] <@SplendidSpoon> He actually does support our issues, from what I gathered [12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> Million Meme March IS a good idea, I talked about it with him at hope, among other Pirate stuff [12:59] <@jokeefe> many of them. I think we are less anarchist than he is. [12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> Right [12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> and we also are not promising people ponies [12:59] <@jokeefe> lol [12:59] <@SplendidSpoon> and other goofy shit [13:00] <@[bsod]> why arent we [13:00] <@[bsod]> dammit [13:00] <@[bsod]> not seriously [13:00] <@jokeefe> not enough ponies, though I guess they could be virtual [13:00] <@[bsod]> i do the satire thing alot and its hard to come back and be serious after that [13:01] <@jokeefe> actually the virtual ponies bit is an easy pledge to keep. [13:01] <+kusanagi> pony.txt [13:01] <@jokeefe> pony.gif [13:02] <@jokeefe> since I think jpeg is a locked format, IIRC. [13:02] <@jokeefe> maybe it is the otherway around. [13:02] <@[bsod]> is it lol [13:02] <@srevilak> I friend of mine used to run security workshops. Exercise: make attackee's workstation print out pictures of my little ponies. [13:04] <@jokeefe> pony spma [13:04] <@jokeefe> spam [13:04] <@[bsod]> i was thinking about actually mailing cans of spam to people [13:04] <@[bsod]> the real post office's mail doesnt have a spam filter [13:04] <@jokeefe> they subsidize it [13:05] <@[bsod]> and most of our food [13:05] <@[bsod]> just the cheap stuff though [13:05] <@[bsod]> and tobacco [13:06] <@jokeefe> so to summarize: 1) Thanks for thinking of us 2) Our Articles of Agreement prevents us from officially helping with your campaign / nominating / endorsing you 3) But you can still run as a Pirate if you want 4) we would be interested in working with you on our common issues [13:06] <@jokeefe> does that sound right? [13:06] <@[bsod]> make it sound warmer [13:06] <@[bsod]> hehe [13:06] <@jokeefe> agreed [13:07] <@[bsod]> so, erik? [13:08] <@srevilak> jokeefe: I think that's the gist of mailing list discussions [13:09] <@mildbeard> I think it's fine. [13:10] <@jokeefe> thinking about the 1% rule, I would be fine with changing it to we can do it if we have people running for half the legislature. [13:11] <@jokeefe> I just don't want us to go the way of the Libs/Greens and mostly/only focus on state-wide races. [13:11] <@[bsod]> what if it said, unless 90% or some certain threshold of party members consent [13:11] <@jokeefe> BTW: there is a bill to reduce the party threshold to 1/2 % rather than 1% and halve the number of sigs required to get on. [13:12] <@mildbeard> half the legislature might be even harder to meet [13:12] <@[bsod]> 20,000 seems more realistic of ever happening [13:12] <@[bsod]> ofc, the state population increases significantly every year [13:12] <@jokeefe> you think we cannot get 100 candidates from 20,000 members? [13:14] <@[bsod]> does the quality of candidates matter? [13:15] <@mildbeard> I guess it doesn't matter, sets the bar very high either way. Either way is equivalent, pretty much. Population or candidates, take your pick. [13:16] <@[bsod]> im not sure if the libs or greens are doing poorly here because of any paticular thing they did wrong [13:17] <@jokeefe> i would be happy to talk about that at another time. [13:17] <@[bsod]> indeed [13:17] <@jokeefe> so lets table the 1% threshold and see if we can come up with a better solution. I always like better solutions. [13:18] <@jokeefe> sound ok? [13:18] <@mildbeard> yup [13:19] <@[bsod]> ah, compromise, carl marx's ways have failed us [13:21] <@jokeefe> ya [13:21] <@jokeefe> mildbeard / kusanagi do either of you have a national report? [13:22] <+kusanagi> The PNC meeting was last night. PPOK was removed from probationary status to observer [13:22] <+kusanagi> We need to revise the PNC Constitution as there were many errors. [13:23] <+kusanagi> I was thinking of having a meeting to fix them either Sunday or Monday over IRC. [13:23] <+kusanagi> I'm actually here as a NY rep, with some news and we may need some help. [13:24] <@[bsod]> i vote not to help them unless they give us $3 [13:24] <+kusanagi> Well, it's good news. We're running a candidate, Jason Sullivan, for a position on the Town Counsel of the Town of Brookhaven, district 3. [13:25] <@[bsod]> but what can we do with only $3 ? [13:25] <@jokeefe> cool [13:26] <+kusanagi> We're going to need to collect signatures to get him on the ballot, as Pirate isn't given an auto spot. Some time in March we'll be doing that, and if anyone can come down to help or give advice, we'd greatly appreciate it. [13:26] <@jokeefe> we can ask folks to help. I have lots of advice to offer. how many sigs? [13:27] <+kusanagi> about 1500 [13:27] <@[bsod]> out of staters can sign ? [13:27] <@mildbeard> Out of staters can help gather signatures. [13:28] <@[bsod]> o i c [13:28] <+kusanagi> no, out-of-staters can't sign, but can help gather [13:28] <@[bsod]> im far too lazy for that [13:28] <+kusanagi> I can't even sign, you have to live in the district [13:28] <@[bsod]> that's what i thought [13:28] <@mildbeard> kusanagi, it might help if there were a specific event or initiative you were organizing, that we could ask our members to go down and help with. [13:29] <@[bsod]> im just too busy being a 24 hour dad, minus atlest 16 hours [13:29] <@[bsod]> 8hourdad.com [13:29] <+kusanagi> It's in planning. I wanted to give a heads-up first. [13:29] <@jokeefe> my talk is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24jkyLYz5HU [13:29] <@mildbeard> OK cool thanks. [13:29] <@[bsod]> i saw that once jokeefe [13:30] <@jokeefe> my slides are at http://www.masspirates.us/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/CampaignToWin.pdf [13:30] <+kusanagi> awesome, thanks [13:30] <@mildbeard> that's a good talk [13:30] <@jokeefe> Mass. Greens are holding a campaign training in Worcester 2/23 [13:30] <@[bsod]> almost an hour though, need some free time [13:31] <@[bsod]> wasnt it the green rainbow now [13:31] <@jokeefe> I can do a google hangout/skype/mumble call/etc. with campaign staff if you want. [13:32] <+kusanagi> that would be awesome. we were going to meet on sunday, but blizzard [13:32] <@jokeefe> yes, it is bsod, just keeping it short. [13:32] <@[bsod]> ya ok [13:32] <@jokeefe> snow! [13:32] <@jokeefe> finally! [13:32] <@[bsod]> tpb-afk comes out tomorrow just in time for the storm [13:32] <@[bsod]> if you get stuck at home [13:32] <+kusanagi> So I plan on going to play in the snow and have the meeting with Jason and Zac next Sunday [13:33] <@mildbeard> One problem we had here was that they had gerrymandered our candidate's district. [13:34] <@[bsod]> hehe, can we do overnight door to door, people would love that [13:35] <+kusanagi> bsod, LOL [13:36] <+kusanagi> we're planning on door-to-door, and we have a copy of the district's areas, so we should be okay with that [13:36] <@jokeefe> right, mildbeard, door-to-door with the voter list is a great way to do it and it gets people thinking about the candidate. [13:37] <@jokeefe> having the voter list is best. don't want to show up at a place where the people there are not voters. [13:37] <@jokeefe> at least for the signature drive. [13:37] <+kusanagi> some events are in embryonic stages of planning [13:37] <@jokeefe> how long do you have? [13:37] <+kusanagi> till July I believe [13:37] <@jokeefe> to gather sigs? [13:37] <+kusanagi> yes [13:37] <@mildbeard> wait, how many do you need? [13:38] <+kusanagi> 1500 [13:39] <@jokeefe> when can you start? [13:39] <@jokeefe> and who can sign? [13:39] <@mildbeard> should be doable. I'll try to make it down to help -- that's such a wide timeframe. [13:39] <@jokeefe> any voter or a subset? [13:39] <+kusanagi> any voter [13:39] <+kusanagi> in that district [13:39] <@jokeefe> good [13:39] <@jokeefe> right [13:40] <@[bsod]> hmm, ok... guys; cya next week, sorry I didn't help with anything! (again) [13:40] <+kusanagi> honestly, we can start right away, but we need to plan a few things first [13:41] <@jokeefe> take care bsod, please fill out the poll for the next meeting [13:41] <@jokeefe> who validates the sigs? [13:42] <+kusanagi> after being signed by a witness, i believe the local board of elections [13:43] <@jokeefe> great. don't wait until the end to get them to them. the biggest problem is to think you have enough raw sigs, as mildbeard said, then turn them in and not have enough. [13:44] <@jokeefe> also plan to get way more valid sigs than you need so you have enough if they challenge you. [13:44] <+kusanagi> yeah, we're going to hopefully begin at the end of the month/early march [13:45] <@jokeefe> good [13:45] <@jokeefe> so I think we are off of the official meeting, motion to adjourn? [13:46] <@mildbeard> Are you asking for a motion, or asking us to second yours :P [13:47] == Shidash [~shidash@647-46-00-319-lturxotb8w.bu.edu] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds] [13:47] <@jokeefe> 2nd [13:47] <@mildbeard> I either move to adjourn the meeting, or I second jokeefe's motion. [13:47] <@mildbeard> aah, the latter [13:48] <@jokeefe> I'll be clearer next time. [13:48] <@jokeefe> All in favor? [13:48] <@jokeefe> aye [13:48] <@mildbeard> aye [13:48] == Shidash [~shidash@647-46-00-319-lturxotb8w.bu.edu] has joined #masspirates [13:48] == mode/#masspirates [+o Shidash] by [4Q] [13:48] == mode/#masspirates [+v Shidash] by [4Q] [13:49] == mode/#masspirates [+l 22] by [4Q] [13:50] <+js0000> aue!
