Summary

  • Airport protest. Suggest having signs for several whistleblowers. Bring press release, flyers, camera. No costumes. We'll do this on President's day. Mon, Feb 17th. (Motion passes, 4-0)
  • Arisia. Planning to do cryptoparties and campaign training. Probable attendees: jokeefe, srevilak, Joe
  • Ageis will try to find spaces to do Feb. campaign training in Western MA
  • 1/11 - Demand Carmen Ortiz's Job.
  • 1/18 Boston Common Smoke Out/Vape Up! protest. Protests on 3rd Saturday of each month. General opinion: Boston's no-smoking/vaping in parks law is a dumb law that will be selectively enforced, and a slap against Masscan. Motion to support protest passes, 6-0.
  • Valentine's day fundraiser. Democracy center is not available on Feb 14th. We propose March 1st instead (at the Democracy center). 5pm to midnight booking; this includes time for setup and teardown.
  • 1/5 Campaign training. Lucia and Jamie bringing cameras. Lucia bringing tripod.

[9:04pm] Joe: Joe Guertin, Bellingham, Ma
[9:04pm] Joe: Well that looks much better
[9:05pm] Igel: William Fleurant, Arlington MA
[9:05pm] Joe: As a warning, I may end up falling asleep at my computer. I'll try to last as long as I can
[9:05pm] • Igel looks at agenda
[9:06pm] jokeefe: np, Joe.
[9:06pm] jokeefe: We have a busy January
[9:06pm] Joe: I'll be there Sunday. I'm going to carpool with Lucia
[9:07pm] jokeefe: Cool!
[9:07pm] jokeefe: Please talk up the 1/5, Campaign Training event, if you can
[9:08pm] jokeefe: srevilak, would you introduce your Snowden Airport Protest idea?
[9:08pm] srevilak: I can't claim credit for the idea -- just passing it along
[9:09pm] srevilak: Idea is: head to airport, with sign that says "Edward Snowden"
[9:09pm] srevilak: wait around like you're waiting for him to arrive
[9:09pm] srevilak: There's a national effort to do this on Jan 3rd
[9:09pm] srevilak: But, could also do it later
[9:09pm] srevilak: IIRC, German PP may have come up with the idea
[9:10pm] davidd: yep, they started it after snowden had fled hongkong
[9:11pm] jokeefe: What about broadening it to include other whistleblowers as well. Manning, Kiriakou, weev, etc.
[9:11pm] davidd: i think pp norway threw an actual trollbait at the national media
[9:11pm] jokeefe: oh, what did they do?
[9:11pm] davidd: that they were expecting him and he was already on the play
[9:11pm] jokeefe: haha
[9:11pm] srevilak: Here's where I heard of airport protest: http://lists.pirateweb.net/pipermail/pp.international.general/2013-December/014971.html
[9:12pm] davidd: http://www.aftenbladet.no/nyheter/utenriks/Piratpartiet---Snowden-reiser-til-Island-via-Norge-3203354.html#.UsYcdEPAORs
[9:12pm] davidd: that was just a few days after he arrived in moscow
[9:13pm] davidd: than next some german pirates went to airports with signs
[9:13pm] jokeefe: sound like an idea we should do?
[9:14pm] srevilak: jokeefe: no objections to including other whistleblowers. Were you thinking of all @ once?
[9:14pm] davidd: well it makes less sense when you are doing it in the US
[9:14pm] jokeefe: yes, different people, have different signs
[9:15pm] jokeefe: Of course only snowden would appear at the international terminal
[9:15pm] srevilak: I'm game.
[9:15pm] jokeefe: so am i
[9:15pm] jokeefe: suggestions when, was thinking M-Th for best media coverage.
[9:16pm] davidd: so when you go do something like that, what kind of gear do you take with you?
[9:16pm] srevilak: Sure. Snowden arriving with weev and Manning. Heard about it on the internet. Must be true
[9:17pm] srevilak: davidd: probably pirate costumes and some leaflets
[9:17pm] jokeefe: press releases, video camera to record it
[9:17pm] jokeefe: for this I would suggest leaving the costumes
[9:18pm] jokeefe: signs of course
[9:18pm] davidd: you have some meeting planned yet?
[9:18pm] jokeefe: planning meeting?
[9:18pm] davidd: you have regular bar meets in boston yet?
[9:19pm] jokeefe: We have a monthly issues meeting, and local chapters are meeting once a month/three weeks
[9:20pm] Igel: davidd: now your're talkin
[9:20pm] Garret joined the chat room.
[9:20pm] jokeefe: hi Garret
[9:20pm] davidd: so if you meet somebody that asks about the sign tell them about the meetings
[9:20pm] Igel: ill swing thru the ville meet, eh..
[9:20pm] Garret: hi! took forever to find the link. lol
[9:20pm] srevilak: davidd: yes, we've been doing issues meetings at pub-ish restaurants
[9:20pm] jokeefe: Agenda at http://masspirates.org/wiki/January_2nd,_2014_IRC_Meeting
[9:21pm] jokeefe: On 1.2 Snowden (all whistleblowers?) Airport Protest
[9:21pm] Joe: Hey Garret
[9:21pm] jokeefe: picking a date
[9:21pm] jokeefe: great lgel
[9:22pm] Garret: airport protest?
[9:22pm] jokeefe: yes, you game?
[9:22pm] jokeefe: Thinking having people with signs for Snowden, Manning, and other whistleblowers
[9:22pm] srevilak: Garret: http://lists.pirateweb.net/pipermail/pp.international.general/2013-December/014971.html
[9:23pm] Garret: umm.... i dunno. that might be a tricky one. i'd be very open to considering it
[9:23pm] jokeefe: why tricky?
[9:23pm] Garret: reading that link now
[9:23pm] Garret: tricky as far as reaching a receptive audience
[9:23pm] jokeefe: was thinking more of getting media attention
[9:23pm] Garret: hey, this is cool!
[9:25pm] Garret: umm... so standing around waiting for Snowy to land... would this be inside/outside? (brrrrrrr)
[9:25pm] jokeefe: inside
[9:25pm] Garret: sweet. i'm in
[9:25pm] srevilak: inside, where everyone else is waiting for arrivals
[9:25pm] jokeefe: dates?
[9:26pm] zby_ joined the chat room.
[9:26pm] srevilak: Maybe February? (We have ~ 7 events in Jan)
[9:27pm] zby left the chat room. (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[9:27pm] Garret: Feb works. I plan to be booked up the third weekened of each month fighitng Boston on the smoking fines
[9:27pm] jokeefe: true
[9:28pm] Joe: Fighting the smoking fines should be fun
[9:28pm] jokeefe: any dates of significance in Feb.?
[9:28pm] srevilak: Presidents day?
[9:28pm] Garret: ewwwwww
[9:29pm] srevilak: Garret: IMHO, that makes it a fine day for a protest
[9:29pm] Garret:
[9:29pm] jokeefe: Monday, February 17, works
[9:29pm] jokeefe: all in favor?
[9:29pm] srevilak: aye
[9:30pm] jokeefe: aye
[9:30pm] Igel: ayw
[9:30pm] Garret: aye
[9:30pm] Garret: (Thomas Robert Malthus, British economist, born February 17, 1766.)
[9:30pm] jokeefe: oh lord
[9:30pm] jokeefe: any opposed?
[9:31pm] passstab joined the chat room.
[9:31pm] jokeefe: hi passstab
[9:31pm] passstab: hi jokeefe
[9:32pm] Garret: can we call it the Thomas Robert Malthus's Whistleblower Day?
[9:32pm] jokeefe: ha ha no
[9:32pm] jokeefe: try not to be associated with Malthus
[9:33pm] jokeefe: motion passes then
[9:34pm] jokeefe: On Arisia, anyone going besides srevilak & myself? We are having a crypto party / campaign training at it
[9:34pm] jokeefe: Also, aegis, would you be able to find us a place to hold a campaign training in Feb. in W. Mass?
[9:35pm] ageis: I can see what spaces are available
[9:35pm] jokeefe: thank you!
[9:35pm] ageis: how big ? do we need it for free?
[9:35pm] jokeefe: pref. free, 10-20
[9:35pm] jokeefe: people
[9:35pm] ageis: okay!
[9:36pm] Joe: I will be trying to make it to Arisia
[9:37pm] jokeefe: thank you
[9:38pm] jokeefe: great
[9:38pm] jokeefe: Just a reminder about the 1/11, Honor the Memory of Aaron Swartz; Demand Carmen Ortiz's Job protest
[9:39pm] Garret: 1/11... i'll be sure to come out.
[9:39pm] Garret: bullhorn?
[9:39pm] ageis: theres a new piece on Boston Magazine about Swartz http://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/article/2014/01/02/bob-swartz-losing-aaron/
[9:39pm] srevilak: I have to be out of town that weekend
[9:39pm] jokeefe: cool on both counts aegis & Garret - so, Boston banned smoking in public parks, right Garret?
[9:40pm] jokeefe: directed at cannabis smokers
[9:40pm] Garret: HA HA HA HA HA. ya... ya, they tryin. official, the ban is in effect now. passed unanimously
[9:40pm] jokeefe: 1/18 Boston Common Smoke Out/Vape Up! protest
[9:40pm] Garret: on the surface it's targeted against all smokers and vaporizers, cannabis and tobacco... but really it is a sideshot at Masscann
[9:40pm] jokeefe: and then periodically until done?
[9:40pm] Garret: MassCann and the cannabis movement
[9:41pm] Garret: these will be monthly on the 3 weekend (saturydas, except April cause 4/20 is sunda)
[9:41pm] jokeefe: just cannabis, or tobacco also?
[9:41pm] Garret: both
[9:41pm] Garret: all of the above
[9:41pm] Garret: $250 to smoke on the common
[9:41pm] Garret: tobacco, cannabis, smoking, vaping (e-cigs)
[9:41pm] Garret: we're gonna have it all
[9:42pm] Garret: to smoke on ANY boston park
[9:42pm] jokeefe: thanks! folks in favor of endorsing the protest?
[9:42pm] Garret: i can go into a rant here... but here's the https://www.facebook.com/events/642274562499212/
[9:42pm] Igel: lool
[9:43pm] Igel: you shouldnt smoke in the park
[9:43pm] Garret: why?
[9:43pm] Garret: it's open air
[9:44pm] jokeefe: cars do it
[9:44pm] Garret: cars do WORSE, in much greater quantity
[9:44pm] srevilak: I think it's a bad ordinance, which will only be selectively enforced
[9:44pm] jokeefe: aye
[9:44pm] Garret: exactly! seletive enforcement is my gripe
[9:44pm] Igel: cars dont throw ciggs on the grass
[9:44pm] jokeefe: then enforce the littering laws
[9:45pm] Garret: cars drip antifreeze, oil, gas, and a dozen other chemicals into the environment all day
[9:45pm] Igel: but theres no police there
[9:45pm] Garret: exactly, it's not enforceable, and if they do enfroce, the can only do it selectively. it's not reasonable and it's contrary to liberty.
[9:45pm] Igel: if cars drip anti freeze, then they would over heat and break down, same goes for oil
[9:45pm] Garret: enforce a littering fine: I'll back that all day
[9:45pm] davidd: so only in parks
[9:45pm] Igel: if they leaked gas they wouldnt pass inspection
[9:45pm] ageis: RMRECONNS
[9:45pm] ageis: oops
[9:45pm] davidd: smoking on sidewalks still allowed?
[9:46pm] Garret: Igel, my car did it for 5 years. put a gallon in every week of antifreeze
[9:46pm] Bluestreak joined the chat room.
[9:46pm] Igel: well
[9:46pm] Igel: you should have cut it 1/2 with water
[9:46pm] jokeefe: davidd, yes, I believe it is only in parks
[9:46pm] davidd: hi Bluestreak
[9:46pm] Bluestreak: Meep
[9:46pm] jokeefe: hi Bluestreak
[9:46pm] Bluestreak: Sorry all
[9:46pm] Bluestreak: *I WAS ASLEEP*
[9:47pm] srevilak: Bluestreak: http://masspirates.org/wiki/January_2nd,_2014_IRC_Meeting#Participants
[9:47pm] Bluestreak: (Rough day)
[9:47pm] srevilak: item 1.5
[9:47pm] srevilak: er, 1.6
[9:47pm] Garret: I did cut it with Water, lol. not the point.
[9:47pm] Igel: oooh
[9:47pm] Igel: hey
[9:47pm] Garret: and yes, any PARKS are fined, not the street
[9:47pm] Igel: Garret i thought this was a littering ban
[9:47pm] jokeefe: debating 1/18 Boston Common Smoke Out/Vape Up! protest
[9:47pm] Bluestreak: No will
[9:48pm] davidd: have a great night all
[9:48pm] Bluestreak: Not about littering
[9:48pm] jokeefe: good night davidd
[9:48pm] Bluestreak: u2 d
[9:48pm] davidd: and if you happen to have a clear sky tonight, have a look at jupiter
[9:48pm] Igel: hey i think this is a problem
[9:48pm] Bluestreak: Blizzard here d
[9:48pm] Garret: no, it's a smoking ban, not littering. it's even targeting vaporizers.. which don't litter.
[9:48pm] davidd: its the brightest diamond in the sky, vevry easy to spot with this new moon
[9:49pm] Bluestreak: The fact that it is about vaping too...
[9:49pm] Igel: so this is pretty lame
[9:49pm] Bluestreak: really points to it being a counter to the successful drive against peohibition
[9:49pm] Igel: sorry for arguing the littering thing...
[9:49pm] Garret: i feel this is a continuation of the fiasco w the Freedom Rally, where City Council fought us on the permits and won limited success in cutting us back (but failed because we rallied bigger andbadder anyways)
[9:49pm] Bluestreak: Agreed
[9:50pm] Igel: yeah
[9:50pm] Garret: it's gonna be billed as "spontaneous" so no individual can be easily targeted for harassment.
[9:50pm] Bluestreak: Lucia Fiero (eep)
[9:51pm] Igel: i think its safe to say, people litter with tobacco more than with grass
[9:51pm] Bluestreak: There is also the point that smoking in general is a social thing
[9:51pm] Garret: oh definitely. it's gross. i yell at people for kickin butts in the park.
[9:52pm] jokeefe: if spontaneous, maybe we shouldn't endorse, Garret?
[9:52pm] Bluestreak: No we should endorse!
[9:52pm] Garret: nah, can still endorse
[9:52pm] Garret: spontaneous to say that there is no ring leader
[9:52pm] Garret: ...although, ya know... lol
[9:53pm] Bluestreak: TPTB don't like gaggles of prolitariat lurking together... possibly scheming...
[9:53pm] jokeefe: lgel, you still have concerns?
[9:54pm] Bluestreak: I assume you don't smoke Will? Neither do I.
[9:54pm] Igel: negative, clearly this is not a ban on littering and cigg filters for sake of the park and recs..
[9:54pm] jokeefe: ok, moving to a vote, all in favor?
[9:54pm] jokeefe: thanks, lgel
[9:54pm] Garret: aye
[9:54pm] Bluestreak: aye
