FOSS Tutorials

Worcester farm group is interested in having some FOSS tutorials. Perhaps:

  • how to do basic labels in GIMP,
  • work through a few sample spreadsheets related to seed cost and
  • similarly applicable real-world situations, depending on the needs of the group

Basically how to do graph design & product management with open source tools. Malt will put together a one paragraph description of what we need and we can mail it out to ask pirates to help.

[9:03pm] jokeefe: id
[9:03pm] jokeefe: James O’Keefe, Somerville
[9:03pm] igel: William Fleurant, Arlington
[9:04pm] DesmondRavenstone: Desmond Ravenstone, Boston (Roslindale)
[9:04pm] jokeefe: Review
[9:04pm] jokeefe: How did the Harvard data analysis session go, Desmond?
[9:05pm] DesmondRavenstone: About 1/2 dozen folks, mostly Harvard Law students, combed thru arrest records looking for patterns that might be used in possible litigation.
[9:06pm] jokeefe: cool. is there another one coming up?
[9:06pm] DesmondRavenstone: Some will be at a conference this weekend on queer politics and the carceral state. I'm on their email list for future events.
[9:06pm] DesmondRavenstone: Also brought up December 17th; some interested in attending brief event (it's finals week for them)
[9:07pm] DesmondRavenstone: But there's also been some chatter in a Facebook group about (re)organizing the sex worker community in Boston
[9:07pm] jokeefe: wonderful
[9:07pm] DesmondRavenstone: A December 17th vigil could be an opportunity to do that, as well as getting MPP name out there as an ally for sex workers.
[9:07pm] jokeefe: Looking forward to the next one.
[9:08pm] jokeefe: thanks
[9:08pm] jokeefe: Decisions/Endorsements
[9:08pm] jokeefe: December 17th is Intl Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers
[9:08pm] jokeefe: is there a link?
[9:08pm] jokeefe: http://www.december17.org/
[9:09pm] jokeefe: it would seem
[9:09pm] DesmondRavenstone: Also http://www.nswp.org/resource/international-day-end-violence-against-sex-workers
[9:09pm] DesmondRavenstone: From Global Network of Sex Work Projects
[9:09pm] jokeefe: Will have to tell the Dutch Pirates about it
[9:10pm] jokeefe: thanks
[9:10pm] jokeefe: any questions?
[9:10pm] DesmondRavenstone: Pirates everywhere -- have them link with sex worker groups in their respective countries/regions/cities
[9:11pm] jokeefe: will do
[9:11pm] DesmondRavenstone: Immediate thought I had was hold vigil in front of Boston Police headquarters
[9:11pm] igel: aye same
[9:11pm] DesmondRavenstone: Alternatively, on Beacon Hill in front of state capitol
[9:12pm] jokeefe: either works
[9:12pm] Malt joined the chat room.
[9:12pm] jokeefe: ahoy Malt
[9:12pm] Malt: Sorry I'm late!
[9:12pm] Malt: Sam Capradae, Worcester
[9:12pm] jokeefe: agenda: https://masspirates.org/wiki/October_17th,_2018_IRC_Meeting
[9:13pm] Malt: gotcha
[9:13pm] jokeefe: welcome back. we are on December 17th is Intl Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers
[9:13pm] Malt: Neat
[9:14pm] Malt: we could host a webchat with some anonyized sex workers to talk about the impact FOSTA/SESTA has had
[9:14pm] DesmondRavenstone: If we have endorsement of idea here, I could then touch base with other groups, see favored site (Boston Police HQ or Beacon Hill) and move from there.
[9:14pm] jokeefe: any objections to endorsing this event?
[9:15pm] Malt: none
[9:15pm] DesmondRavenstone: As for FOSTA/SESTA, sex workers are already organizing and chatting heavily on that; but we need to help build an organized sex worker group in Boston/Mass.; this vigil could help do that
[9:16pm] DesmondRavenstone: So, no objections, this looks like a go
[9:16pm] igel: combinded efforts are greater efforts
[9:16pm] DesmondRavenstone: Aye!
[9:16pm] igel: aye
[9:17pm] jokeefe: i have no objections
[9:17pm] DesmondRavenstone: OK then, will reach out to others on getting this off the ground and keep you mateys postes
[9:17pm] jokeefe: BTW: Chelsea Manning's Birthday is 12/17
[9:17pm] jokeefe: Would you write up a statement to put up on the blog?
[9:18pm] DesmondRavenstone: Will do, and I'll email to you James
[9:18pm] jokeefe: the activists list is good
[9:18pm] Malt: would be great to get some poly/fetish community groups mobile on this
[9:19pm] jokeefe: the more people to support it the better
[9:19pm] Malt: fffairly certain there's still a BDSM scene in Boston, yeah?
[9:19pm] jokeefe: Projects
[9:19pm] jokeefe: Regional Meetings
[9:19pm] DesmondRavenstone: There is, but not much politicized. I'll reach out through Natl Coalition for Sexual Freedom, Susan Wright is a friend, she could reach out to folks
[9:20pm] DesmondRavenstone: Regional meets -- any other Boston folks?
[9:20pm] jokeefe: Berkshire meeting may be 12/10.
[9:21pm] jokeefe: there are pirates in boston.
[9:21pm] jokeefe: need to email/call
[9:22pm] DesmondRavenstone: Aye, is there an email group or some such you could put me in touch with?
[9:22pm] DesmondRavenstone: Feeling like I need to get back to bed, so signing off. If you could connect me with other Boston Pirates, that would be great.
[9:22pm] DesmondRavenstone left the chat room.
[9:23pm] jokeefe: Tech Meeting - hopefully 10/28. would that work for you igel?
[9:27pm] jokeefe: Malt - are you available to record a pirate news this weekend?
[9:28pm] Malt: think so! no major plans yet
[9:28pm] igel: yes re: tech/outreach & general communications (i assume?)
[9:28pm] jokeefe: great. will email you and Joe to finalize a date
[9:29pm] jokeefe: that is all I have. Anything else to add?
[9:29pm] igel: (that section in the wiki, no?)
[9:29pm] igel: ok
[9:30pm] jokeefe: so 10/28 would work for a tech meeting for you, igel?
