US Pirates are proud to celebrate Juneteenth.
But what is it?
Juneteenth, a joyous day commemorating the day Union soldiers brought word to Texas that slavery ended after the Civil War. While President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, this act did not end slavery among the rebellious states until the rebellion was finally defeated. Slavery did not end in every state in the Union until the 13th Amendment was ratified on December 18, 1865.
African Americans, through family, church and local gatherings carried on celebrating Juneteenth long through Reconstruction and when Jim Crow laws made African Americans second class citizens. Juneteenth received national recognition in 2021, but the process of liberating African Americans, indeed everyone, in the United States from the blight of racism is still incomplete.
What does Juneteenth mean for the Pirate Party?
Pirates are egalitarian in nature. The tumultuous seas allow us to raise among us leaders without any discrimination. All are welcome. June 19, 2024 is a good day to remember the abolishment of slavery in the United States. It is a good day to remember our core values. And it’s a good day for snacks with our communities too.
