Mass. Legislators aim to hand Hollywood billions for decades to come

Publiced at

We mentioned recently that we gave nearly $90 million to Hollywood in 2016 and gave at least half a billion dollars to Hollywood over the last decade.  The legislature’s excuse is that films create jobs. In 2017, the average salary in Massachusetts was $62,110. It cost $102,888 in tax credits for each job created. Additionally, a film won’t get a tax credit unless it spends more than $50,000 in Massachusetts. Your small up and coming local film maker doesn’t benefit from the tax credits. We are losing on the deal and Hollywood is profiting. Thankfully, the film tax credit that makes this possible is scheduled to expire in 2023. Now 100+ Massachusetts legislators support HD388 which would make the film tax credit permanent. We cannot let that happen! Ways you can help include: monitoring the bill’s page to identify when the hearing will be; contacting your legislators to tell them to oppose this bill; getting family, friend and neighbors to call; organizing people to speak in opposition to HD388 at the hearing; organizing a lobby day at the state house or legislators’ local meetings; reaching our to other groups to coordinate opposition to this bill. We need your help! Contact us at info@masspirates.org if you can assist this effort.
