Somerville Pirate Meetup This Saturday

Publiced at

The Somerville Pirate Meetup is this Saturday, May 18th, 10:30am-1:45pm. It will be at the Somerville Public Library, 79 Highland Ave.  in the auditorium on the first floor. We will discuss our plans for 2019, work on our platform for the 2020 elections and teach people how to run for office and protect their privacy. Also, we will talk about how to support efforts to impose a ban on police use of facial recognition technology. The Holyoke Pirate Meetup will be June 22nd at the Holyoke Public Library, 250 Chestnut Street. It will be in the Board Room. We have the space from 11am to 4pm, so contact us with what times work best for you so we can narrow the time period.  Though if there is interest, we could use the whole time to talk about our platform, teach people how to run for office and how to protect their privacy. The notes from the Boston Pirate Meetup are up at our wiki page for the meetup.  The platform discussion built on our 2018 party conference platform discussion. If you want to help with an upcoming meetup or organize one in your region, send us an email.

Chelsea Manning Released

Publiced at

Chelsea Manning was released recently when the grand jury that had demanded her testimony was closed. She was in jail for refusing to participate in a grand jury investigating Wikileaks releases prior to 2016. Unfortunately, it is expected that she will be called before another grand jury and jailed for refusing to participate with it. You can view or read her recent statement on these proceedings. We support Chelsea Manning in her struggle to stand for her conscience and principles. To fail to support Chelsea and other whistleblowers now will only embolden those who would limit our First Amendment right to know what our government does in our name. How to Support Chelsea Manning Chelsea needs donations for her legal defense. You can donate at https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/chelsea-manning-needs-legal-funds-to-resist-a-grand-jury-subpoena.

We oppose anti-sex work vigilantism

Publiced at

The Massachusetts Pirate Party (MAPP) is highly critical of recent efforts launched against massage parlors and spas by a group calling itself Organizing Neighbors to End Exploitation, done in the name of “fighting human trafficking”. As well-intentioned as these efforts may be, they are clearly ill-informed and only serve to perpetuate marginalization based on race and immigration status. These efforts are further complicated by their reliance on questionable information provided by the Polaris Project, an organization which claims to educate and mobilize citizens against sex trafficking, but in actuality conflates trafficking with consensual sex work, proposing measures which jeopardizes the safety and well-being of sex workers based on flawed data and vague presumptions. While the MAPP condemns human trafficking, we oppose misinformed vigilantism and excessive use of carceral methods to address this problem, especially when they undermine human rights and jeopardize the safety and well-being of sex workers. We propose that law enforcement consult with sex worker organizations such as SWOP-USA and Desiree Alliance, and responsible anti-trafficking organizations such as Freedom Network USA. Additionally, we call for a moratorium on arrests involving consensual sex work, as a step towards the long-term goal of full decriminalization.
