Thanks for helping at Freedom Rally

Publiced at

Thanks to everyone who helped out at our Freedom Rally table. We met hundreds of people, signed up more supporters (welcome to you all) and even tested live streaming from our booth. We also handed out 500 flyers telling people how to protect themselves from identity theft due to the Equifax hack and some simple things they can do to protect their privacy on-line. We still have 500 more flyers, so if you want some to distribute in your area, please drop us an email and we will mail them to you.

Digital Right of Repair Bills Need Your Help

Publiced at

With computers in more and more of the things we buy, it is vital that have a digital right of repair so we truly control the things we own. Corporations must not be able to lock down their products so that we have to pay them exorbitant amounts to fix them or prevent people from determining their security vulnerabilities or even making improvements. The activists at Right of Repair and iFixit have put forward two bills to support a digital right of repair: H.143 in the Massachusetts House and S.96 in the Senate. H.143 has 38 co-sponsors in the House. S.96 has 13 co-sponsors in the Senate. Massachusetts is the last state to have not sidelined digital right of repair bills. We have to get it passed here! The Joint Committee on Consumer Protection will hear testimony on the bill today. The hearing will be 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Room B-1 of the State House. If you can offer three minute long testimony in support of it, please do. Right now, we need to help get more legislators to support it and get it out of committee. Please find your legislators’ contact info and call to urge them to support these bills. If they are already a co-sponsor (listed below), thank them for supporting the bill. If your state representative or state senator are on the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection, all the better. Committee members are: Senate Committee Members Barbara A. L’Italien, Chair Michael D. Brady (co-sponsor) Sal N. DiDomenico Ryan C. Fattman House Committee Members Tackey Chan, Chair Daniel J. Hunt, Vice Chair (co-sponsor) Ruth B. Balser James Arciero Smitty Pignatelli Jay D. Livingstone Jonathan D. Zlotnik José F. Tosado Juana Matias Steven S. Howitt (co-sponsor) Joseph D. McKenna And Digital Right of Repair bill supporters … Read more

Digital Right of Repair Hearing on Sept. 26th

Publiced at

Massachusetts legislators will hear testimony for and against Digital Right to Repair on September 26 in the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection. The bill is H.143 in the Massachusetts House and S.96 in the Senate. With computers in more and more of the things we buy, it is vital that these bills pass so we truly control the things we own. Their passage will ensure that if you need a digital device repaired, you can take it to an independent contractor instead of the manufacturer or can repair it yourself. The hearing will be 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Room B-1 of the State House. If you plan to speak at it, you will have only three minutes. Please email us so we can coordinate the topics and issues we all cover.

Help stop Milford from banning cannabis sales

Publiced at

Bryan Cole of Milford Citizens for Fairness wanted Pirates, especially those in the greater Milford area, to know that he and other Milford residents are fighting against Milford imposing a recreational cannabis sales ban. The election is September 19th, so if you live near Milford and can lend them a hand, you will help promote responsible Cannabis retail sales and not knee-jerk fears. You can reach Bryan at bcolemilford@gmail.com / (401) 829-2395. They are also on Facebook.

Freedom Rally is this weekend

Publiced at

We will be at Freedom Rally this weekend starting on Friday and we want your help. This year our space will be used as an outdoor cryptoparty with power and a network. We are looking for volunteers, particularly for pirates willing to show people how to protect their privacy on-line. The hours are noon to 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but any time you can give would be appreciated. We have flyers to give out that tell people how to protect themselves from the Equifax hack and a quick summary on how to protect their privacy on-line. Freedom Rally is an important event for civil liberties and for ending the war on drugs.  It’s also really festive, and a great opportunity for outreach. Sign up if you can help out.

We will be at Freedom Rally next weekend, September 15-17, and we want your help. This year our space will be used as an outdoor cryptoparty with power and a network. We are looking for volunteers, particularly for pirates willing to show people how to protect their privacy on-line. The hours are noon to 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but any time you can give would be appreciated. We will go over the basics of personal privacy in an on-line video session this Sunday 8-9pm. You can sign up at: https://discord.gg/FND2QwU We will likely be right next to one of the entrances to the underground garage and on the path from Charles Street to the Parkman Bandstand. Once we know the exact location, we will contact you so you can find our table. Freedom Rally is an important event for civil liberties and for ending the war on drugs.  It’s also really festive, and a great opportunity for outreach. Sign up if you can help out. Thanks!
