On our Activists email list, First Officer Steve mentioned an NY Times story (paywall free version) on how a vehicle manufacturer (GM) sells driver data to LexusNexis, who then packages it into risk profiles for insurance companies. The article contains a link where you can request a copy of your profile data from LexusNexus. Steve requested his to see what it contains. - Check your connected car app, if you use one, to see if you are enrolled in one of these programs.
- Do an online search for “privacy request form” alongside the name of your vehicle’s manufacturer. There should be instructions on how to request information your car company has about you.
I went looking and found Toyota’s Privacy Hub. Options include finding what information they have on you, correcting the data they have, telling them not to share it, and my favorite, asking them to delete the data they have. This is going to take some work.
