By now, you have probably heard that the US House of Representatives voted to pass H. R. 7521, which would force ByteDance to sell TikTok to a non-Chinese company. The Massachusetts delegation voted 5 to 4 in favor. Auchincloss, Keating, Lynch, Moulton and Trahan voted for it. Clark, Presley, McGovern, and unexpectedly, Neal, voted against it.

Supporters claim that this bill will protect the Chinese government from reviewing US users’ data. It won’t prevent the sale of user data to thousands of corporations, government agencies and stalkers. To do that, we need a federal data privacy law with teeth!

President Biden said he would sign the TikTok Ban Bill, but it looks like the Senate is not eager to take it up. Now would be a good time to call Senator Elizabeth Warren at (202) 224-4543 and Senator Ed Markey at (202) 224-2742 to tell them to oppose H. R. 7521 and support a real data privacy bill.

On tonight’s Pirate News at 7:30pm we will cover the US House’s vote to ban TikTok.
