Sunday EU Pirates and other EU residents demonstrated for the #SaveYourInternet campaign opposing the European Parliament's upcoming vote to impose copyright upload filters and a link tax. Monday Trump announced a new NAFTA treaty that would establish a notice-and-takedown system for copyright safe harbors for Internet service providers (ISPs). Unfortunately, we don't know the details yet, but it looks like the US needs its own #SaveYourInternet campaign. What we do know is that update filter...

Julia Reda, Pirate Party MEP for Germany, has sounded the alarm about Articles 11 and 13 of the EU’s Copyright Directive that passed a committee vote.  The vote in the EU parliament is expected in early July. If it passes, the EU will take a big step toward censoring the Internet on behalf of the copyright monopolists and give plenty of authoritarian governments justification to censor the Internet. Tanzania's blogger tax went into effect, Russia has been doing it and China has perfected it. ...

Julia Reda, Pirate Party MEP for Germany, drew our attention to the upcoming European Parliament Legal Affairs Committee vote on June 20th on Article 13 of the EU’s Copyright Directive. If passed, it will impose a link tax and setup a copyright censorship system. By adopting such a system, the EU will embolden every authoritarian government to expand Internet censorship, aid the copyright maximalists attempt to lock down our culture and end up helping large incumbent corporations like Facebook a...

Congress is considering S.2823 and H.3301, which would extend some cherry-picked parts of federal copyright to cover sound recordings made between 1923 and 1972. It would force streaming services to get licenses for those recordings, even though all that does is create a new subsidy for rightsholders (which are usually record labels and not artists) and make it harder for music fans to listen to old recordings.  These bills would make it harder to get recordings into the public domain and would ...

Recently, the US House approved the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act. The Senate's cloture vote passed overwhelmingly Monday with only Wyden and Paul voting against it. Like SESTA, FOSTA would censor any site that allows user supported content without actually hindering sex trafficking. The Senate will resume consideration of FOSTA at 11am Wednesday, the 21st. Now would be a good time to call Senator Warren at (202) 224-4543 and Senator Markey at (202) 224-2742 and tell them how this bill ...

With computers in more and more of the things we buy, it is vital that we have a digital right of repair so we truly control the things we own. Corporations must not be able to lock down their products so that we have to pay them exorbitant amounts to fix them or prevent people from determining their security vulnerabilities or even making improvements. The activists at Right of Repair and iFixit have put forward two bills to support a digital right of repair: H.143 in the Massachusetts House...

Massachusetts legislators will hear testimony for and against Digital Right to Repair on September 26 in the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection. The bill is H.143 in the Massachusetts House and S.96 in the Senate. With computers in more and more of the things we buy, it is vital that these bills pass so we truly control the things we own. Their passage will ensure that if you need a digital device repaired, you can take it to an independent contractor instead of the manufacturer or can repai...
